Firestrike:

MORE BENCHMARKS COMING 3/14/17 with the new Windows patch that will fix the scheduler problem.

If any of you remember my all AMD build, it can be found here.

This is an upgrade to that build, so I will keep this short.

PLEASE NOTE - System is still in WIP phase due to BIOS and Software support that is slowly rolling in, some pictures may be different then others due to me testing with different parts.

UPDATE: All cores running at 3.7Ghz, stock voltage while running on the stock cooler. Temps are mostly the same, performance improvements in single and multi-threaded applications.

Finally Ryzen is here....

And with new platforms comes new problems.

So far this upgrade has been fairly alright. The problems so far from the early adoption have been memory incompatibility, weird temperature readings, and lack of software and BIOS support. So I cannot unfortunately OC just yet. However later on I will update it. (Most likely later this week, or if I get bored, later today lol)

Compared to the 8370, the Ryzen 1700 completely kills it. Everything the 8370 did the 1700 will do twice as fast in half the time. AMD has really outdone themselves this time and have given us a nice fresh update to the aging FX architecture. The new Wraith Spire is excellent, and my old Wraith cooler fits over the socket with no problem, so any CPU coolers that use the latch should fit.

Now its no Intel killer, but its right up Intel league, and it'll give them a run for their money. I do agree its not the best for gaming but for consumers who do more then just gaming, the Ryzen series will suit you well.

For the other parts I upgraded the case to the Coolermaster Mastercase Maker 5 and the RAM I saved over from the X99 build that I totally didn't replace with an FX system. :P

I hope I can push this system farther, stay tuned for updates!

Part Reviews

CPU

AMD have outdone themselves with Ryzen 7. For $329 I obtained 8 cores and 16 threads for the price of a competing i7-6700K with half the cores and threads. Overclocked the CPU on all cores to 3.7Ghz on the stock cooler to close the single threaded performance gap between the 1700 and the 7700K.

I couldn't be more happy with this CPU, great investment that will serve my needs and last me for the AM4 platforms lifetime.

The upvotes on this build will be Ryzen fast soon. I guarantee it.

I'm sorry, I had to

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 58 points 4 months ago

You know the Phenominal thing about all this is that soon builds like this will be Ryzen up from the shadows and Bulldozing over Intel in no time.

:P

IwannaPC 10 Builds 7 points 4 months ago

They'll be driving flattening out part of the massive pile of Intel builds like a steamroller.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 17 points 4 months ago

But then you'll need an Excavator to dig it all up! :PPP

I'm running out of puns lol

PhantomStorm 13 points 4 months ago

This build will run a tri-athlon while intel can't run a hundred meters.

Marcolino101 12 points 4 months ago

And render FX on blender with fury. It'll also RAM through his previous build.

Nuckles_56 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

And I thought you were such titan of puns

Marcolino101 1 point 4 months ago

Now AMD has DDR4, it'll RAM through memory benchmarks. P.S. Anyone have any good puns for Carrizo?

Dizzlepop12 5 Builds 16 points 4 months ago

Was looking forward to a 1700 build! People saying Ryzen is a disappointment really don't understand how much of a big deal this is. If you're a streamer, video editor, or a digital artist who also plays games; the R7 series is a dream come true. 6900K performance for a fraction of the price. Truely amazing! I can't wait to see what the R5 and R3 series have to offer!

Also, +1 on that SEXY stock cooler. I'd give up my H7 for that thing, no joke.

LatamirDigital 3 Builds 4 points 4 months ago

THANK YOU! R7 wasn't meant for 1080p gaming, these people complaining about that is utter nonsense.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 3 points 4 months ago

Thanks for the complements!

Also I agree, Ryzen may not be the "Intel killer" everyone was hyped for, but it comes up really well against the X99 platform at consumer prices!

Dizzlepop12 5 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

May I ask how smooth the setup process was with your MSI board? Did you encounter any memory problems, considering you're running at 2800MHz? I know Asus boards have memory problems right now.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

RAM currently won't run higher then the stock speeds of 2133mhz.

Also Windows have been giving me memory errors in the form of BSOD which I can't find the problem to however I assume it just has to do with the BIOS issues atm and there will be a fix soon.

I have another system I can use if I need to, or I can just run with 4GB for now.

SubNauticaWaterWorld47 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

The Bios errors should be tweaked out in the coming months.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Good good

TeraBuilds 7 points 4 months ago

Wait for a few months after the games optimization for Ryzen and that ryzen will be a Absolute BEAST

Are you planning on getting an aftermarket cooler?

PLEASE SAY YES lol

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

I already have an aftermarket cooler lol (needs bracket)

I kinda like the Spire though, the RGB on it is cool :D

pegotico 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Yes it does..

You mean the hyper 212?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Arctic Liquid Freezer 240

pegotico 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

StarBlazer457 3 points 4 months ago

AMD has some SPECIAL FX on their stock cooler! Keep Bulldozing AMD. Awesome build! +1

Ada 2 points 4 months ago

Have you tried running only two Sticks of ram the IMC is all kinds of borked I understand and doesn't like anything faster then standard clock speeds with more then 2 Sticks.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks for the info, I'll try it with 2 DIMMs

Ada 1 point 4 months ago

ASRock has tables up on there product specifications showing what speeds are supposedly officially supported per number of DIMMs and dual channel or not.

Kenjionigod 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

This is basically the build I'm planning myself. Want to know how the Fury and Ryzen pair.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

They pair great. The lacking performance from the 8370 is basically gone now as the CPU is much faster and this lets the GPU shine. It's a great pair.

I kinda wish I had gone mITX though, I wanted to do a Ryzen 1700 build with an R9 Nano, would've been sweet!

Matthewtina2015 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Should've used a Nano S as well

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I wasn't paying $40 for shipping on top of the $40 for your Nano S when I could've bought the case new for $50 :P

Matthewtina2015 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

I know I'm just messing

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

If you pay the shipping I'll do it :P

RaspberryPiFan 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

That's a nice looking stock cooler.

Chants for benchmarks

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I'm actually doing a callab with IwannaPC, there will be a video with benchmarks comparing Piledriver to Ryzen. So stay tuned for those benchmarks :)

LeMMingSlayeR 9 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Nice build! I ordered the exact same CPU and Motherboard, waiting for FedEx as we speak should be building by Wednesday. As soon as my bracket from corsair comes I will put my h100i on it, but to be honest looking at yours I really like the look of that stock cooler. I took a gamble on some Crucial Ballistix DDR4, I hope it's compatible because I couldn't find anything like a compatibility list before I ordered. I know as an early adopter of a new platform there may be "teething" issues, depending on bios updates and the like. Awesome build! I hope you have a smooth transition to the new platform! Thanks for sharing!

+1

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Thanks!

Currently I would keep the DIMMs at 2133mhz till they fix the BIOS issues, that's your best bet.

LeMMingSlayeR 9 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Will definitely do that, thanks! I'm so excited, hurry up FedEx!

joshzpants 3 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks!

joshzpants 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

did you go to microcenter to get the mobo and cpu and how is the stock cooler?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Yes the Combo took off $30, gotta love Microcenter lol

The stock cooler is great, I might just keep it and use my AIO for something else. I love the RGB ring on it and it keeps it nice and cool ever with all cores at 3.7Ghz

joshzpants 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Wow I guess that is a low tdp processor because the metal part of the heatsink looks so cheap. How many systems do you have now? It seems like you put together a new build every few months lol

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Yeah the CPU actually does run quite cool under the heatsink, it's only acopper baseplate and the alluminim fins under the 92mm fan which is pretty quiet. So no doubt here it's a 65W chip.

I currently own two PCs, ones a backup/test bench type deal and the other is my main PC, which changes sometimes because I'm an indecisive little **** lol

Currently have another one coming out soon, I decided for my Grandpa I'm going to build a "console killer" mITX HTPC with the RX 460 I have and one of the CPUs you can see in the pictures ;)

ewhac 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

Make sure you register that extremely well-photographed serial number with AMD before someone else does...

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Er, whoops lol

cmn65 3 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

that's the CPU cooler than comes with the ryzen cpu??! Wow.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 3 points 4 months ago

Ikr? Good idea from AMD, much better then Intels stock cooler.

darthfutuza 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Benchmarks?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Working on those with another user, he'll be making a video.

darthfutuza 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Cool, looking forward to seeing what it can do!

Jesso2k 7 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

How's the memory speed w/ 4 sticks? I keep seeing only x2 recommended without much follow-up.

Loving the cooler paired with that psu light.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

I just took out 2 sticks for now, I keep getting the BSOD with memory Errors but I know he memory isn't faulty.

KiloParsec 1 point 4 months ago

That's the stock cooler? That's amazing, but how does it perform?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

It is the stock cooler. It's the AMD Wraith Spire and for a 65W chip it keep it pretty cool underload. TBH I could probably OC to 4.0Ghz with a tiny voltage increase on it lol

KiloParsec 1 point 4 months ago

I'd have to give AMD the win on coolers, that looks so much better than Intel stock coolers.

Krlos 1 point 4 months ago

That AMD stock rgd cooler does look nice. The only thing that bothers me is that the AMD logo is to the side, not directly on top, looking up. Nice cooler tho, no idea how it performs but looks very pretty.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I could unscrew the fan on it and rotate it 90 degrees and do that so its on top.

Krlos 1 point 4 months ago

oooo that is good to know. Maybe some people might not care about that but i dunno maybe i have OCD or something.

chinamanch 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Nice !!! a new beast in the ho-Ryzen :v a definite upgrade for next year but I will wait till dust the settles and when M-ITX boards are available and bios issues fixed. R5 or R3 is for me.

chris76816 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

How does it perform in premiere pro?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Unfortunately I don't have premiere pro, sorry.

Liclac 1 point 4 months ago

So, is your system stable right now? Please share the problem you had with AM4 especially memory incompatibility issues. I am very concerned about it since I'm building one soon.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

ATM, the system will throw me BSOD randomly and it's either a memeory issue or a thread issue. Windows 10 is have instablitiy issues with Ryzen and AMD are working with Microsoft to fix it.

Also there are BIOS issues and it seems I have to wait for fixes as the X370 motherboards are getting updates first.

I might reinstall Windows to be safe and run with only 2 DIMMs for now to see if that helps.

Liclac 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks! Are you running the 1607 anniversary version of windows 10? And, do you have any tips to avoid ram incompatibility issues?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

How do I check the exact version of Windows? Im not sure.

As for the RAM, run is at 2133mhz, and in dual channel mode.

Liclac 1 point 4 months ago

I gues 2133 and 2400 are the best and safest choice then. Thanks man!

To check the windows version: go to setting, system, about. There you'll fine your windows build. I heard 1607 is required to run ryzen with minimal incompatibility issues.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Yes Im running 1607.

XFacility 1 point 4 months ago

Woo hoo Ryzen! xD +Rep

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks!

pioco56 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

we have to wait for ryzen 3 and 5 for gaming, ryzen 7 is for workstations.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I wouldn't say it's specifically for workstations. People who do more then gaming, like streaming and content creation will find these CPUs to handle their needs, and it can still game fairly well.

OCing it will also help the singlethread speed and close the gap in performance. AMD is also working with game developers to optimize games for Ryzen, so patience is key.

pioco56 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

Ryzen 7 is for more than gaming, Ryzen 5 and 3 will handle it almost as well but at a lower price, since most games don't usally use more than 4-6 cores. One thing that kinda kicks Ryzen in the gut is that AMD is always lagging behind in single core performance, one thing that all games are affected by.

Concluding, Ryzen 7 can do gaming very well and much other things, but its not the best gaming CPU for the money since it lacks the single-core performance. Ryzen 3 and 5 would probably be ryzen 7 just cut down, so they would keep the same single-core performance and have less obsolete cores whilst reducing the price. That's my point, Ryzen 3 and 5 are the best bang for your buck game wise.

About the same performance from 300-500$ to 150-250$

rhali8 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Ryzen 7 is for more than gaming, Ryzen 5 and 3 will handle it almost as well but at a lower price

Not true. The Ryzen 7 series CPUs are more inclined for workstation tasks thanks to their excessive number of cores. The Ryzen 5 and 3 series CPUs will perform better in games. The lower amount of cores/threads means clocks can be raised higher, which will improve single core performance by a fair amount. This will result in a big FPS increase in games and paired with the coming optimization from game developers, we'll be seeing Ryzen CPUs outdoing Intel in gaming too.

Razorwing02 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

I'm going to build a ryzen 7 1700 build too Should I use this ram stick https://pcpartpicker.com/product/nZfmP6/gskill-memory-f43000c15q32gvrb It's 3000 MHz With 15 cas ?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Yes that should work.

However until the memory issues are fixed, I strongly advise using them at the stock speed of 2133mhz.

ethamb -2 points 4 months ago

Never mind I will go with flare X With 14 cas And 3200 MHz

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

That's the BIOS it came with

remsteel 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Where did you get that tomahawk for 79.99? Glad you got it already. I'm still waiting on an update of when mine will ship (pre-ordered from Amazon at 109.99).

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

I canceled my Amazon Preorder and went to Microcenter to get the combo, it was $79.99 after a CPU/Motherboard combo discount of $30.

I couldve got another $20 off if I bought a GTX 1070 or 1080 with it, but AMD all the way lol.

Z.Bo 1 point 4 months ago

Well done! Are you planning to install a Linux distribution? I am interested in the multi-threading performance in Linux platform. :D

Cheers!

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

No sorry, I have no use for a dual boot of Windows and Linux, I do all my stuff on Windows.

We are working on a video about Ryzen performance, I'll see what I can do.

SilverWolf149 1 point 4 months ago

Great build! Ryzen has finally come!

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Godemis21 1 point 4 months ago

I have the I7-2600(Non K) and am wondering if the R7 1700 would be able to at push out better FPS at 1440p Ultrawide. If not it looks like I am waiting for Cannon Lake or Ryzen+ or whatever they call it. Since you had a 2600k can you let me know if you saw any difference?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Well I just bought the i7 for a different project, and I'm not really sure.

However from the benchmarks I've seen Ryzen does pretty good at higher resolutions so I'd say if you want go for the 1700.

However the 2600 is still a decent CPU, but it's probably starting to show its age alittle.

xxapollo0902xx 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Crustybeaver 1 point 4 months ago

I'm confused there are top looking watercooled/modded builds on here that get half the votes but slap an AMD processor in an average looking build and it appears the community go nuts for it. Err I guess well done.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

Well it's is a brand new CPU line from the company that hasn't updated their architecture from 2011 till now, so I guess people really like to see AMD in the sea of Intel builds.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

jakesno 1 point 4 months ago

Great answer. I've been planning my build since December and I'm going with the i7-7700k, I'm as unbiased as you can get. There was a fair amount of hysteria for the Intel chip and like you said the AMD release finally put loads of builds in motion so for me it's a great time to build in general. Great looking rig, and you said best it's only going to get better as the kinks get unwound. Terrific build, awesome components. +1

Crustybeaver 1 point 4 months ago

So choosing to build a PC with an AMD processor because it's new is a basis for a couple of hundred upvotes and a feature? I used to enjoy this site, a place where people could express their skills, talent and vision to create unique PCs. These days the site is full of generic looking builds with no imagination that are awarded features for choosing the newest parts. This has to be the most over rated build to date.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 3 points 4 months ago

This has to be the most over rated build to date.

Thanks! :D

jakesno 1 point 4 months ago

Point taken. I still think the excitement has a lot to do with the release for the long awaited chip(s). The first Kaby Lake builds got a bazillion votes. And more to your point I enjoy mods and original builds as well.

Maybe you've got some insight into modding? I need to drill/cut (dunno which) grommet holes into 3mm acrylic. Don't have access to laser. Any suggestions?

Crustybeaver 2 points 4 months ago

I don't have access to a CNC laser cutter but I wish I did. For small holes your best bet would be to use a drill and for larger holes you can use circular drillbits or an adjustable hole cutter. Other tools that are good to have for cutting and shaping acrylic are a good knife and cutting ruler, a Dremel and jigsaw for cutting lines and a heat gun and home made acrylic bending bending machine (you can make one out mdf and a couple of hinges, search for diy acrylic bending machine on Google image search)

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Skylord_Milkyway 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

have you tried pushing the overclock any more on the CPU on stock cooler? I want to see what others are getting for the stock cooler, it seems pretty good. I pushed my 1700 to 4.03 GHz on it, but it gets a little toasty. Great build though, id +50 it if I could. EDIT: Is that an LED panel on the bottom of your case? I NEEEEDDDD IIITTTT

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I'm just waiting for the early adoption bugs to get ironed out before I OC more, I'm having some problems with AMDs SMT and Windows 10, and I don't think it likes my memory speeds which I had to set to 2133mhz.

Also yes, that LED strip came with the case, it's nice.

Thanks!

Skylord_Milkyway 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Fair enough, it's pretty buggy right now, although I didn't get near the results others were getting in bemchmarks, I was getting +5fps over everyone with the same specs and same settings. So I don't know, we'll see how it goes and how the r5 and r3 series launches

oneflygtiguy 4 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

It has been a while since an AMD build made it to the front page for a feature. Well deserved! Lets hope the board manufacturers and Microsoft iron out some of the software and driver bugs so we AMD fans can really appreciate what we now have access to.

YES! A Ryzen featured build! Nice lighting bye the way!

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks! I love the lighting, it came with the case.

sniperpro 1 point 4 months ago

great build and love the fury gpu but i do i have a passion for the tri-x coolers, anyways do not even bother to upgrade the cooler because it can only oc to 3.9 and maybe if you push the vcore way high and have some custom loop you could get to 4g, glad to know the amd fanboys like me are still here

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I was planning on keeping the cooler, the stock one is good enough for me and it's good looking. Lol

Radox-0 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Very awsome build. Looks great and have been looking forward to seeing a CPU and gpu amd combo. Man for a stock cooler that thing is noiceeeee. Easy +1 from me

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks!

Aulos 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Love the ability to just a build a PC for the heck of it, I'm envious. Not the same style I'd have gone for but still looks great.

I like that AM4 board, just wish they'd have some shroud over the IO. Makes the board look so much better, even just a simple one.

Good choice with the OC. To be honest, even with a seriously beefy AIO water cooling unit, reasonable voltages can still bring the temps pretty toasty in those 400mhz beyond. And most cpu bound gaming results (not sure about other applications) show diminishing returns with that additional frequency. Just bringing all those cores up to that same max frequency does so much for this chip, and keeps the system power consumption very low and reflective of this chip's amazing efficiency shown in the stock numbers.

Can I work on this PC with you? I'll BIOS some time.

The puns are Ryzen up and are Bulldozing any puns Intel can make...

You'll need to Excavate Intel from the ruins...

Do you have a Pile of Intel chips? Why no drive them into the ground?...

Intel must have a lot of Pent-ium emotions.

That cooler looks really nice, though. +1!

dragoon20005 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Congrats on getting featured in Build of the week.

just for science.

can you do benchmarks ranging from disabling SMT/HT so only 8 cores are running

the next test is running 4 cores and 8 treads just like the i7 7700K and OC the heck out of the 4 cores and see if the CPU could hit above 4.2GHz with just 4 cores

then test just 4 cores and 4 treads and see if you can OC it the highest

this might give us an idea of how the Ryzen R5 and R3 may perform

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Well I still have yet to iron out some of the issues because I have no BIOS updates from MSI unfortunelty.

I'll see what I can do, benchmarks will be done either tmw or Friday.

dragoon20005 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

yea i heard the X370 gets the updates first :/

I was looking at the MSI X370 Ti board or the Asus Crosshair board

i will prob be looking at the Asus Crosshair board, because i heard it got a new BIOS pretty fast after a few complains in the ROG forums.

They do take their customer feedback seriously

very nice ryzen build i plan on doing my first pc with ryzen but with a twist hows the 1700 treeting you

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Nice

It's treating me well, nice upgrade to my 8370. Once they get the early adoption bugs ironed out it'll be smooth sailing from here.

3.7Ghz on stock cooler seems to be a good overclock. Wonder what you will be able to push once you get the other cooler set up!

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Other cooler? Nah, this stock cooler is too cool to replace lol

Rofineli 1 point 4 months ago

3.7Ghz is the boost frequency. And the new coolers are fairly capable.

insectdoughnut7 2 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

wow never have i ever thought a stock cooler looks so good gg AMD

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Even their older Wraith looks good, you can see that one on my other cheaper build, The Emeperor's Revenge.

Apach3 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

congrats on getting your Ryzen build going and congrats on Featured status on a modern PC with a stock cooler! my Crosshair VI Hero isn't looking so good, unfortunately, but thankfully i have my X99 system to tide me over.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks!

What's wrong with your motherboard? I heard ASUS was having all types of problems.

Apach3 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

well, my first mistake was flashing the beta BIOS when Windows kept crashing. then i noticed i had high idle readings (47C average with spikes to 60C) despite the cooler itself (Hyper 212 EVO) not even being all that warm. after reinstalling Windows with a more recent ISO, the stability problems were sorted out but there was still that temperature issue. when i went to flash a stable BIOS, it didn't really go all the way through and now i can't even power it on.

i'm gonna do what i can, but chances are this board is done for. i think it's partially my fault for thinking a beta BIOS was gonna solve my problems.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

There is a tempature issue, but iirc the chip isn't actually running at the temps reading in the BIOS.

If the BIOS didn't fully flashed then that was most likely the cause of the boards failure, what happened during the BIOS flash?

Apach3 3 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

ah, i figured. i wonder if other boards have that issue as well.

and that might actually be my fault, believe it or not. it hung on POST for a while during the BIOS flash to the latest stable from the site, and when i pressed the reset button it cycled and then shut off immediately. that was the last time it was actually running.

i've got a couple more options, including of course sending it in for repair, but atm i'm in no rush and worst-case i'll just get a new board.

Charmin 1 point 4 months ago

Not gonna lie, that Fury looks great with the rest of the build. How much performance did the overclocking bring? Did it actually close the gap between the 7700K and the 1700, or at least made the difference negligible? Sexy build, +1!

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I'll have benchmarks on it soon, the single core score was close to the 6700K after I Overclocked it and the Multicore beat the 6900K, so I'll make sure to have those benchmarks soon.

How hot get this Proc when Gaming ?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Depends on the game.

Under a normal gaming load it'll hover around 55C to 60C

Under a full 100% load using all cores and threads it's around 70C.

vajjala1986 1 point 4 months ago

I also have a i7 2600. What is the upgrade like - in games and other stuff? I am not asking for benchmarks but a kind of feel in general. Is it worth it?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

I actually just bought the i7 recently used for something else, so idk.

I had the FX 8370 actually that you can see in the last comparison picture, and the upgrade from that was awesome.

mpr_do 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

you can rotate the cpu fan from the block by unscrewing the top screws and placing it so that the amd branding is on top

RyanOCallaghan01 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Stock cooler keeping CPU at ~60C with all cores at 3.7? NICE! Is it noisy?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 4 months ago

It's not noisy at all, pretty quiet for me.

RyanOCallaghan01 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

hmm. In an 1800X review, i've heard that 95 is the max temp that Ryzen CPUs can operate at, but the 95W 'X' parts all have a 20C offset. Does this mean the 65W parts like the 1700 will only operate up to 75? If so, 60 doesn't sound as good as I thought.

:o

how did you spend $33 on 8gb ram and then $52 on another 8gb ram? and where can i get 8gb for $32?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Back in December of 2015 we got the first kit for $50 on Amazon, then in April of 2016 I decided to upgrade and buy another kit, and by then prices had dropped down a lot so it was $32.

Due to the RAM shortage ATM, prices have shot up again and you won't find 8GB for under $50 anywhere unless it's used.

Would this be a good micro ATX build for 1080p gaming? I want to overclock the CPU to 3.7 GHz.

Please don't comment on the ram I just like the look.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Looks good.

Although if all you're doing is gaming at 1080p then you're better off with the i7-7700K which ATM is the best CPU for just gaming. Up to you really, the 1700 is pretty good too for it, way better then the FX series.

TpmeNugget 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Great looking build. love the looks of the stock ryzen cooler but how well does it function under load? would it be worth it to pick up a 3rd party cooler?

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks!

TBH it works just fine overclocked under the stock cooler, I wouldn't have a reason to spend more money on a cooler unless its for a 4.0Ghz OC.

wwadsworth 1 point 3 months ago

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 3 months ago

I got these parts but like what do you guys mean by bios update? Is there something I am missing I have never built a computer.

CPU $329.99 AMD RYZEN 7 1700 3.0GHz 8-Core

MOTHERBOARD $79.99 MSI B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 2 points 3 months ago

The BIOS is the interface you go into to configure the CPU and other main settings, usually it's accessed by tapping the DEL key on the keyboard during start up.

To update the BIOS you download the files on MSIs website and put them on an empty flash drive, then in the BIOS you go to the flash setting and select the correct BIOS files and it will update.

eduarfp 1 Build 1 point 6 days ago

do you have any problems running 4 Ram DIMMS with Ryzen?? beautiful rig

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 6 days ago

No, but I did having problems running it with that RAM because Ryzen was in its early stages of launch and had some compatibility issues.

omarshiha -8 points 4 months ago

your old i7 (2600k) will game better than the new ryzen at 1080p :)

Dizzlepop12 5 Builds 7 points 4 months ago

That's simply not true.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 4 points 4 months ago

I actually just bought the i7-2600K cheap for a different project, and was originally using an FX 8370.

I'm fairly certian that the Ryzen is no slouch at gaming, and I would like to stream and do other things to, so I'm happy with my choice. :)

AMD is also working with game developers to improve game performance, so only time will tell.

Dr4wF0ur 2 points 4 months ago

actually ryzen is fine for gaming, it's designed for workhorse computers but can still hold a candle to intel gaming machines.

tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 3 points 4 months ago

hold a candle to intel gaming machines.

Performance is great! Was a great Upgrade from the FX 8370 in both the single and multithreaded areas.

Hmmmm I'm not quite sure about your question? Are you asking if the Fury will have a significant increase over the 470, or if upgrading your CPU to Ryzen will help the performance of your 470?

[comment deleted by staff]
tomtomj2 submitter 8 Builds 1 point 4 months ago

Ah

Well that would all depend if you really feel that it would be a worth while upgrade.

First you need to make sure you have at least a 600W PSU with two 6+2 pin PCI power connectors first.

The R9 Fury is faster by about 10 to 15 percent then both the RX 480 and the GTX 1060. The 470 is right up the 480s league so it's about 20% slower then the R9 Fury.

Overall is a decent upgrade, but you will be giving up 4 GBs of VRAM for extra performance, up to you.
