Description

First and foremost, let me say that all the photos are not ready. Life is always in the way of having fun ;). More pictures (higher quality too) are on the way. Secondly, I would like to thank MSi, PCPP and all the wonderful people that help me enjoy my passion of computer technology and applied technology. Without the support and generosity I may have never had the opportunity to have a machine of this calibre for my personal use. Now, onto the build.

The name of this behemoth was eluding me... A machine like this needs a name worthy of it's output... and since to me this has swallowed my world whole and flipped me into a new era... Fenrir seemed apropos.

Now, as per the contest rules... some parts when unavailable may be swapped with equivalent parts. Well they went above and beyond with 2. Original list had the H100 GTX and the MSi GTX1080 Aero. Lo and behold... I receive the H100i V2 and the MSi GTX 1080 Gaming X! Well... the color at first irked me... but honestly... it worked out better than expected. Mostly due to me forgetting the Red LED's that were already all over the MSi Titanium. It's a very... patriotic build :)

The build went fairly smooth. Emphasis on fairly... Bench test proved all the main parts were up and running, AIO mounted smooth as butter, used my Arctic on hand rather than the pre applied. Flipped the sticker on the Predator so it wouldn't look funky, Added a single DIMM and off to boot. First time like a charm ;)... And that's where the charm ended...

Had to leave it for the night, so came back the next day, mounted inside the tight (and admittedly my fault for that) P400S, which required a little modification of the Seasonic's ATX 24 Pin cable (cut the heatshrink and cable sleeve so I could mount in behind mobo) and a lack of forethought on the PCI-E and USB 3.0 adapters (to be fixed), mounted the other 7 DIMMS... and NO BOOT!!! I almost fell over... dismayed and beaten back... I had no static, fans were active... motherboard had power but was getting boot error 04/60... meaning CPU wasn't talking. Okay... troubleshoot time.

And pay attention because I forgot my cardinal rule... always take out what you put in last...

Loosened AIO... thinking may just have been a tad liberal on pressure. Nope

Moved 1080 across all PCI-E lanes... Nope

Tried a CMOS reset... nope

Took Seasonic out of Hybrid mode... nope nope NOPE!!!!

Oh man, what did I do? How the bloody fitwiggengly gibbit...

oh wait...

Removed DIMMS one by one... SUCCESS!!!!!! DIMM in slot 4 was no good. Replaced all other modules, boots fine. Used suspected DIMM in known good slot, boot error. Phew, Not motherboard sided, just a bad stick... I sighed relief, lived with the dentistry issue and went on my merry way.

Now, This machine could be the pinnacle of OC potential. But simply put... I do not need to, therefore I shall not. This thing is ridiculous and I prefer quiet while working over having the most massive framerate. On top of that, pure longevity. I did get an overclock stable on CPU at 4.2 GHz on a stress test to check the silicon lottery... probably could have gotten more... but meh. Thing hasn't hit 60 on stock clocks during stress and won't even touch 50 when I am doing my thing. Same with GPU... I just don't have a game that actually pushes this GPU, so why push it further? My Firestrike score was 17584 on my outdated bench... so why mess with it?

Things yet to be done (Because it never ends... ever);

  • 3 new 120mm LED fans, probably Corsair ML's
  • Re-route PCI-E and USB 3.0 Cables
  • Sleeved PCI-E and CPU cables
  • Front Decal (designed by my wife)
  • Phanteks LED Strip to tie into front panel LED
  • Proper high end mousepad
  • Proper bloody chair....
  • More on hand storage... NAS is nice but nice to have p2p transfer off network.
  • Figure out this bloody stutter glitch whenever I install CUE for the Corsair Pro

As said, more pictures coming soon! Enjoy... and if you made it through this wall... here's your cookie

Part Reviews

CPU

It's a monster. I don't know what else could be said. I haven't even put utilization outside of stress to 40%. Makes me think it's time to grab some new software ;)

CPU Cooler

Love the LED, link software has always done good by me, but that awful USB 2.0 adapter and the included fans leave a little to be desired. Keeps things frosty and no pump whine... so no complaints there.

Memory

I will still give this 5 stars even though 1 DIMM dead out the gate. 2 reasons. Advertised at 2400... showed up as 2400. and secondly, the RMA process is literally the most painless I have ever been through. a 2x8 kit, no receipt, no proof of sale. Here's your number.. only send dead stick back. Just amazing from the Team Group.

Storage

Not the first NVMe I have used, won't be the last. May not break the benchmark charts... but color needed to be co-ordinated ;) great performace, transfred 16 GB from an external drive in under 3 mins. Actually have no time because I walked away to the little boys room and it was done O.o

Video Card

Wasn't what was on the list... but you honestly think i can complain? Well... a little bit. Shade of sag due to the beef of this card, but that will be rectified shortly. Backplate saves the day while looking beautiful. But one thing, I can't replace the rear PCI-E Cover shield due to the pure size of this monster. Won't go back in :/ oh well. Heard the fans ONCE during AIDA 64

Case

Okay, I SCREWED UP... lol. For a NON E-ATX board, this case would work amazing. With the E-ATX... a tad tight. My error but made it work. the SATA powered Fan controller is a lovely touch, and the front LED's are just understated enough to make it sophisticated and sexy.

Power Supply

Had to mod the 24 pin, but other than that cables weren't stiff, hybrid mode switch is in an awkward spot, and I am well aware I went with a white PSU when I will never see the damn thing... but ce la vie. Platinum efficiency and the SeaSonic name. nuff said.

Monitor

Leftover from ZiGGuRaT. Using to keep diagnostics or info open while gaming.

Monitor

Oh... My... Goodness this thing is amazing. IPS Ultrawide, and I have never had better color clarity from a monitor in my life. Seriously, if 144 hz or 4k isn't your thing... BUY THIS MONITOR! Everything looks so smooth it's ridiculous.

Keyboard

Good tactile click, loving the brushed aluminum. Only wish the LED's were RGB but i can deal. First mech KB in 10 years and missed every minute of it.

Mouse

I would give this 5 stars... if CUE worked!!! I can't control the LED's or the DPI because every time I load CUE, the mouse stutters, stops and is nearly unusable. So Yellow/Blue solid LED's till that's fixed...

External Storage

Technically it's my test/bench drive... but may as well include it. Has all my software on it so all I need to do it pick and choose what benchmarks/tuning/AV etc. when custom building for others. always had issues with it and 8.1, but no longer with Win 10

Other

Loud, proud, and used for the software I need via CD only.

I exactly know your pain here. I had a DOA 1x4GB RAM Kingston before which I ordered it from Amazon, and they graciously refunded me. It sucks when this happens but thankfully it's not the MOBO.

Otherwise, it's really awesome to see your build come to life. I'm so happy for you. I enjoyed the description and may you enjoy your lovely computer! You have my one ziggurat.

Well, it's not an Eltech library... but it'll do ;) Thank you very much Eltech and more pics on the way, with in-laws DSLR hopefully :)

Oh such nonsense. Your build, description, and photographs are lovely!

Thank you very much Eltech and more pics on the way, with in-laws DSLR hopefully :)

I do love quality photos, but seeing more makes me excited like a little girl in a video game store.

Wolklung 2 points 26 months ago

Congratz amigo! Must have been the most joyous email to receive ever!!

Build is looking great & loved reading the story.

Darn Dodgy RAM modules!!!!

ziggurat666 submitter 7 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

Thank you very much :) Worked very hard on that story... all while trying to evade the common curse word around here...

"Beast" :P

Razorwing02 1 Build 2 points 26 months ago

When you going for the monochrome look but MSi sends you their gaming line

"Whoops! Didn't realize the majority of your setup isn't red and black! Heh heh...

Jokes aside, nice build, congrats, +1 (didja work out that backplate thing yet?)

ziggurat666 submitter 7 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

Funny story... so had the backplate all made for the MSI Aero... definitely doesn't fit the Gaming X... especially since we drilled and milled all holes to spec :/ oh well, sell on Kijiji or E-Bay I guess

Razorwing02 1 Build 2 points 26 months ago

no wait!

you could ask msi to trade-in or just sell the 1080 and buy the aero

ziggurat666 submitter 7 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

Nah, will take this ;) will eat the $100 it cost me lol

Kurajber 1 point 26 months ago

Why didn't you put more RAM into it? :D Great build!

lbazyaka 1 point 25 months ago

Did you have to update the BIOS before using the 6850K or did it work off the bat? I have the same mobo and am waiting for the 6850K I ordered to clear customs (cause it's coming from Canada :/), and I'll finally finish my build. Thanks! +1

ziggurat666 submitter 7 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

Worked off the bat but had to update BIOS to "detect" M.2 drive. It uses it as a boot, but doesn't show up in the hardware monitoring until you do. Weird but let ya know. Also, Overclocks like a son of a bleep... lives up to hype.

lbazyaka 1 point 25 months ago

Alright thanks! Was worried that I might need to get a 5th gen 2011-3 cpu to install the bios update

Thank you very much :), But if they feature this I would be stunned. Honestly I don't think it's feature worthy

Well, in all fairness, I didn't wrap, mod, and go to town like you did :P

Secondly... I have 0 patience... as the MSI rep can attest lmao
