Description

As I was moving from Ireland to Canada I decided to take out my newish pc (from my prior build) but leave the case and old crappy wireless keyboard etc behind and use it as an opportunity to upgrade. I decided on the air540 as it is a bit different and I like the look of the cube. The h100i keeps the cpu under 40 degrees even when gaming and the case and twin frozrs keep the 650tis under 55. Im really really happy with the results and from an earlier bench its getting better 3d mark scores than a 680 which makes me happy. Everything is perfect and I am happy with the way it turned out.

EDIT - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/1794880? Completed 3D Mark scores

Those cards seem alittle weak for a build of this price

Yeah I would agree, although the first build was more budget orientated and for the price they're solid performers. Once the price of the bigger cards comes down and some newer decent titles drop some I shall perhaps think of something a bit more meaty.

Definitely, I'd recommend something like a 770 or 280x. They scale really well.

If the 7xx series of cards were released when you first built your other build, wouldn't it be better to just get one 770 instead of two 650 Ti? Also, why the Windows Ultimate?

I got the copy of Win7 Ultimate for free from a friend and when I bought the single card for my first build the 650ti boost seemed to be the best price per performance available at a decent price. In the future I may swap it out but at the moment I can run any game I enjoy at max settings.

my friend is thinking of going SLI with the boosts. He already has one. Can you tell me how your performance is in some games and settings?

I was very surprised at the performance of these cards, they really are underrated and in SLI they outperformed my friends gtx680 (he has the same watercooled 3570k and similar motherboard etc). I haven't tried too many of the big newer titles yet, as my internet connection here doesn't allow me to play BF4 or download anything above 40kb/sec. I was running BF3 Maxed out 1080p over 100fps steady, Dayz 1080p on high around 60fps (using RAMdisk). I will run another 3DMark now and post up my findings.

Sounds great. it really seems like if someone made a build on a budget to begin with and used the boost, and if they were still on a budget later down the road they could pick one of these up again and really come out ahead. 660 doesnt seem like a big enough leap to warrant an upgrade. 760 would seem the next likely option but its a bigger leap in price.

Thanks man! The build quality on this case is insane, I thought my old Zalman Z1 was well built but this is leagues ahead and the air being blown out is ice ice cold.

I love this case. I went with an air cooler for my CPU and it's still wonderful. Glad you like it!

So we meet again my Irish chum... Sorry, you had a couple of comments on my build a few months back. Good to see you made it out here. If you're in need of any help, feel free to PM me. What area of Edmonton did you move to?

BTW, very clean on the cable management there.

Hey man! Yeh I remember commenting on your build. I'm living in the North East (Eastwood) at the moment, but needless to say I will be moving ASAP. This area seems to be very rough and full of drunks/hookers/homeless. Where abouts are you man? What quality of internet is there in these parts, I spent $100 on the network card hoping for it to improve my connection but at full signal im still getting 40kb/sec and cannot online game, landlord assures me it a 20mb line.

I've seen a lot better elsewhere, but it also depends whether you go with Shaw (cable) or Telus (DSL). I'm with Telus, on what was their best service a couple years ago (24 Mbps), and I'll max out on uTorrent at roughly 2Mbps down/90Kbps up. Shaw's a bit faster, but I don't know practical speeds with them, as I avoid them like the plague (they're pure evil). Either way, I've got no problem with online gaming.

Anyway, I live in a similarly crappy neighborhood (about 118ave. and 82st.), although that goes for a lot of Edmonton. I'll be moving out of this building in a few months since my landlady is an absolute *****, but I will miss the neighborhood. All the crackheads and such have provided me with plenty of entertainment while I was bored sitting on my balcony. Just watch your back if you're coming back from the bar at the wee hours and you'll be fine.

Good to hear. Maybe I'll hit ya up for a drink at some point when I'm back in town... Currently in the process of moving out of my crappy 'hood (probably to another crappy 'hood. Gotta love Edmonton), and I've gotta say, I've never had a life a strange as it's been the last two weeks... Long story...

I can fully hear ya matey, I've lived a few places and I've never seen such a high concentration of odd individuals in my life! Face licking smackheads on the train, violent natives, break dancing homosexuals in the street. We have it all!!

Agreed! yet to play anything that staggers, just started farcry3 up on ultra 2 days ago and to be honest its a treat! Buying a 120hz monitor was overkill for someone thats usually drunk!
