Description

EDIT: BEFORE commenting take into context what I have written and not what isn't. THIS IS A GRADUAL BUILD, not a completed build so what I have vs what I don't will change over the course of time. Some parts have been added from my own collection so again this is not the final build.

I wanted a new gaming/workstation rig but I have been laid off from my job. I had a budget of just under 900 when I started this build. This build will eventually be a bigger build complete with a custom cooling loop. I had an hdd and a gpu already so the prices were negligible. As you can tell by certain parts this will be an (ugh) red and black build. But seeing since I have StarWars collectibles and the like coming out of my ears I decided to roll with this. I will be taking the grills, fan cover and pcie slot covers off of the case and painting them to match the ram and heatsinks of the mobo. Eventually the specs will be 32gb ram, 2 gtx960's, 4 240gb intel ssd's, 2 Toshiba 500gb 5400rpm 3.5 drives.

Nice build so far! But the 32g of ram seems like an over kill. 16g max will be all you need for gaming. I'll be very interested to see how the 960s go in SLI though! Keep us all posted!

Gaming is the main focus of my build, it is duly noted that 32 gb is overkill but I will also do other things with this. Workstation game rig should be the more appropriate term for my build. Thank you for the support. More pics to come.

Decent build, but I would have gone with a i5 4690k and a tri-x r9 290, then added another down the road. If gaming is your main focus you will see little if any performance increase between an i5 or i7. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Q4dT99

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gM2MdC Eventually this will be the ultimate end build. Custom cooling loop, fans and case modding will be a gradual thing as well. i want the i7 over the i5 for the HYPERTHREADING to maximize performance per core. This is how I want my build. Budget was the beginning focus and with the parts selected I wanted the best from the ground up. I'm not a millionaire but with careful planning my build will get to where I want it to go eventually.

I would go with CFX 290/290x vapor-x opposed to the 970s. Also why those drives? You can get 7200rpm WD blues cheaper.

Blues also have a higher rate of failure, lower rpm will be more accurate with data reads.

What was the point of an i7 over an i5? You could have used the money saved to buy a better hard drive + an ssd, making your computer run much faster all around. You also could have saved on the case, since you had a very strict budget for a GAMING rig, not a showroom engine, and could have bought a 280x with the money. Not saying your choices were the worst because I have seen some pretty awful builds, but your money could have been more wisely spent.

At the time my budget was what I had in my pocket, thats not to say I won't have more to add on to in the future. I want the hyperthreading of the i7 over the i5, hence the eventual upgrades of ram, ssd, etc. Even without an ssd this system now is really fast.Being on a budget does not mean I will not have the money in the future. To be honest this is an upgrade from an i7 930, 24gb, 9800gt build. Going from an i7 to an i5 seems pointless. The i5 4440 is a step up but you will not have hyperthreading, which is important to me. I could have just bought an ssd and a new card and been done but this is going to be a ground up build, one piece at a time. Not a big deal to me. Thank you for your input but I purchased what I did based upon my needs over wants!

No the 4790k is ultimately what I wanted. If I wanted a server grade i7 yeah xeon, but as it stands I made the choice for my parts as I wanted but in the order I need them so my build will grow.
