Description

Hey All. Little bit about me. I am a decorator from South London and have always wanted to build my own PC. At the young age of 35, it was time!

Having a small child, the budget was never going to be massive so I wanted to keep it to £1000 (not including accessories or monitor). I ended up going £200 over, but was over the moon with the end result. My goal with the build was power, silence and looks, a stealth machine.

CPU : 4770K..... I know I could've gotten away with an i5, but hopefully applications will start to make use of hyperthreading in the future.

CPU Cooler : Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3..... Similar performance to the Noctua, but looks so much better. Also extremely quiet and matched my case fans. Was a nightmare to install, my own fault. It was a Friday night, I'd had a couple of beers and was knackered. Wasn't until the morning that I realised I should have taken off the GPU first. Fail on my part.

Motherboard : G1 Sniper z87..... Incredible value, good oc capabilities and great sound.

Ram : Patriot 1600mhz..... Small, black and low voltage for 60 quid, simple.

GPU : Gigabyte GTX 780 Ghz Edition..... Yes, its op for 1080p, but I want 120hz and a little future proofing. Also, its so pretty and lightning fast.

HDD : 2 x Samsung Evo 250GB..... Sooooo fast. 1 x for Windows, 1 x for Steam.

PSU : XFX 850w Black Edition..... Probably op, but gives me room to sli in the future. Black cables were a must, and in hybrid mode, fan is hardly ever on.

Case : Fractal Design define R4..... Was going to go for the NTXZ H440, but there was a wait for it, and the R4 came up for £65. My original plan was to remove the top hdd rack as it really blocks the fans..... it looked so good that I decided to remove both and place the SSD's on the back. However I didn't like them there so I got creative, removed the top hdd bracket and used the SSD's to hide the unused drive housing thing.

I think it looks awesome, let me know what you think?

Fans : Be Quiet Silent Wings 2 PWM 140mm x 3..... Got 1 as an exhaust to move the rear fractal one to the front. Liked it so much that I ordered 2 more for the front. They are so quiet!

PCI slot covers : SilverStone SST-Aeroslots..... After I removed the Hdd drive bays and the Fractal fans, the white pci slots just looked wrong. These black aeroslots look great and let more air out (apparently). The holes are larger.

Monitor : Benq XL2411Z 1080p 144h..... Wanted 120hz and liked the look of this. Was a nightmare out of the box, and I nearly sent it back. Managed to play with the setting and apply an Asus ICC profile and it now looks great.

I know my build may not have the cool lights and be as flashy as others, but the compliments I get are "is your pc even on?" and "I didn't notice it there", and that for me is great. It does go in the lounge and my wife cant even hear it and we both watch TV while I use my pc.

Please take it easy on this first timer, and let me know what you think.

Thank You.

I like what you did with the ssd's (not sure if its part of the case). Great build!

Thank you. I have the ssds stuck to the side of the drive bays with velcro. It's such a perfect fit, I wonder if fractal should put mounting holes there?

They should! They look awesome mounted the way you have them

I was going to say... that's a very clever location to mount SSDs. Well done!

Love the build mate and the pic look good to. Very nice cable work! You can always get your lights and windowed side panel at a later date. Can't wait to see it for real.

Cheers buddy. Just wish the sata power cables didnt have x4 sata ports on each. Really screws up the cable work. cant find a x1 sata power cable. Will show you tomorrow.

Super clean build. For your PSU issue, if the cables are the ones that cut into the wire when you install the connnector, you can just remove all of them, slide some shrink wrap on them to cover the old marks and just put the one on the end back on. Presto, single sata power cable.

Didn't realise that, will try it when I get a chance. Thanks.

Hey nice build, I'm thinking of something similar soon. Is it better to have 2 different SSDs instead of a 500gig one?

Cheers mate. Re the ssds, not really, I only have 2 because I added a second one at a later date.

How are those slot covers holding up? I'm thinking of using them for my fractal design r5.
