Really wanted to try to squeeze an i3 in here, but budget just wouldn't allow it. Still, this Pentium is highly efficient and offers great performance for the price. A comparable AMD build could be made, likely with the Athlon 860K, but you won't get DDR4 support and its socket, FM2+, doesn't allow any room for upgrades in the future.

Im curious how much would squeezing an i3 in there amount to? And would an amd fx 6300 be good? But other than that thanks bro

  • 2 points

The 6300 build would be okay... But not as good as an i3 or even a Pentium. Intel chips are way stronger at a per-core level, which is the most important for gaming.

  • 1 point

An i3 would run you about another $25-$30. You can just swap-out the Pentium for the i3-6100, all of the other parts can stay the same.

I tried making a 860k overclockable build.. Still went over his budget by about $20.

A little over your budget, but best I could go with an intel with 4 cores (2 virtual).

With this setup and a 760 you can PROBABLY play Ultra on a large chunk of games. Don't expect every game to be maxed out however.

From someone who used to use a 760 in my system, it's a powerful card with lots of potential.

I'd personally stay away from I3s

  • 1 point

Why?

  • 1 point

A bit. But the dual core/HT may pose some problems. Either way it's a build with a better upgrade path to an i5 6600k or i7 6700k.

  • 1 point

Like what sorts of problems? and what mobo would you say would be better?

  • 1 point

Some games don't like dual cores. Far Cry 4 is an example. It won't even launch on a dual core.

If you know what library of games you want to play, then you can get away with the i3. It's still a good CPU, Digital Foundry on Youtube has done a lot of benchmark videos with that specific i3. It's worth a peak.

but doesnt that i3 have have 4 threads

Thinking of building this myself, but this is my first PC build so not sure how good it is... I don't need a hard drive and not sure how much storage space you need so add ~50 dollars for 1tb.
