Budget; £3100 Location; Salisbury Use; Rendering & 3D Modelling Peripherals; N/A Operating System; N/A

Hi Guys,

I have a pretty basic idea of what I want inside the rig, just need advice and guidance from more knowledgable people!

The system is going to be used for heavy rendering, both CPU and GPU rendering softwares, mainly going to be using VRay for CPU rendering, and Lumion 5.0 for GPU, needs to be quickist rendering times possible with the budget above.

Will be over clocking the system aswell.

Below is the parts list I have in mind.

Advice and guidance would be extremely helpful, thankyou :)

Case; NZXT H440 Motherboard; ASUS X99 Deluxe CPU; i7 5960X Extreme RAM; Hyper X Fury Black 32gb 2666mhz GPU; Asus Strix 980ti OC 1.2 Boost Clock running in SLI configuration

PSU; Evga P2 1200W Storage; Samsung 850 EVO 500Gb, WD Black 1TB CPU Cooling; Corsair H110i GTX Extra case fans; Corsair SP120 X2, Corsair AF150

I would skip the overclocking and implement a dual socket workstation motherboard with ECC memory and more cores instead:

With a single CPU installed, render throughput in VRAY will be equal to an overclocked i7-5960X@3.8ghz. CPU power dissipation while rendering will be 40% lower than the performance matched 5960X.

When you're ready to double down on the render performance, add another CPU and heatsink and RAM kit:

That will do vray rendering 50-70% faster than a heavily overclocked 5960X, and be dead nuts stable, cool, and quiet while doing it.

Thank you for your reply Allan, was kind of hoping having not to upgrade for a couple of years after making this rig, so my question is, is a single Intel Xeon E5-2680 going to outperform a 5960X overclocked at 4.6Ghz? because I kind of need the second graphics card in SLI, for the GPU rendering in octane, so I'd be losing a fair bit of performance by only having the 1 GPU in this configuration.

Thanks:)

No.

like I said, it would be on par with the 5960X at 3.8GHZ.

A pair of E5-2630 V3's would deliver export render performance on par with a 5960X clocked to 4.8+ghz.

You didn't say anything about octane render in your original post, thus, the single GPU was proposed.

Octane render does not benefit from SLI. SLI is a technology used to create a single logical GPU from multiple physical GPU's. This is totally unnecessary when using multiple GPU's for non-real-time export rendering or other GPGPU computing. In fact, SLI will actually reduce performance scaling from multiple GPU's in octane render and similar software.
