Does Windows Device Manager work?

I'm in the Windows DM looking for new drivers. How does this system work? Does Windows go into the background, access the component, find it's manufacturer site and download the driver? I just want to know if it is really a good shortcut to going to all the websites behind each component to download the drivers manually?

What route do you all prefer?

Not really. It's good for checking/uninstalling drivers but I've found it pretty useless for installing drivers. It's easier to just download them from the manufacturers website
