My friend is building a PC for $800
No peripherals, just parts.
What would you do?

To cut costs you can go with evga b2 750w psu which is 80+ bronze and semi modular instead of fully. And/OR cut out the SSD.
Also what games is he looking to play? May be able to save money
Probably just Minecraft because he's makes money from Youtube via it, but it is a pretty intensive game on max settings with shaders while recording.
It is but more intense on the CPU though.
This might be a better fit
This is what I would do. The reasons are this. Pascal is coming out this year so all cards will eventually move away from GDDR5 and start to use HBM memory so why waste the money on a top end card now and feel stuck to it. This card is good enough to run all games now, maybe not on ultra 4k but for 1080P no problems. I would change it after like 1-2 yrs after pascal GPU's are released. I didn't use a regular hard drive as I think they are slow and why not just run SSD's, I would get another one when I filled this one up.
Phanteks Enthoo Pro M ATX Mid Tower Case is a great looking case and good value at this price point.
