I've been presented a challenge: I must build a gaming and general use PC for under $200 (this is a build for someone else). I knew that going with all new parts meant extremely low power. So..... time to use Craigslist (and possibly eBay).
So I recently found an old prebuilt that I'll use. I'm getting my hands on it tonight at 8PM (roughly 30 minutes from now). Only costed $50. Has a Sempron single-core, but that will be changed right away. It also comes with Windows 7, so.... yeah. I'll probably change the PSU out, and for sure I'll be adding a cheap GPU. The PSU for sure will be new, not too sure about the GPU.
Update 1: I have the computer in my hands. The guy apparently owns a business like I hope to. Really nice guy, even gave me a basic spec sheet (when I make a business, I'll give people a more detailed list). PS: He's a war vet, more points to him. I'll get a better look at the thing when I get things back to normal in my room tomorrow. PSU is definitely sketchy.
Update 3: So I got in there, and it is HORRIBLE! The CPU heatsink is CAKED with dust, and the rest of the computer has all kinds of dust. Here's a few pics
Update 4: I've ordered the PSU, the EVGA 500B. I'm having a little bit of a hard time getting EVGA's B-Stock checkout to work, but I should have that ordered by tomorrow morning. I checked the bank account, it went through. HUGE thanks to tomtomj2 for helping me find that GTX 660. :D
Update 5: Some bad news, the CPU that I was planning on getting sold. BUT, I was able to find a Phenom II X2 B59 for $20. So I ordered that (it was on eBay) and now all the parts that I need for this scrap build are ordered!!
Got a few notifications today. A: The PSU and CPU have shipped, so there's that. B: My GPU still didn't process! So I reordered it. I can confirm that it is shipping today. I can expect to put parts together within the next week!
Update 2: My GPU and CPU will arrive the same day. Assembly will happen next Friday.
I got bored tonight, so..... I prepped for the new PSU by taking the old one out. There was a metal retention bracket that was specifically designed for that PSU. The OEM was Hipro, so while it might work for what the system currently is, it certainly won't do for a GTX 660.
Also, I did even more dusting, so now the system is about as clean as it's gonna get until I get the Phenom, when I'll clean the CPU cooler and finish it off. I ended up with 6 wipes in the trash or so, it was really disgusting in there.
Big news: I checked the shipping status on the CPU, and it's coming today unexpectedly. Totally fine, I definitely wanted this part ASAP so I wouldn't have to worry about it as much. I'll be using some of my leftover Cryorig thermal compound, so you can't get after me about that.
Update: The CPU got here about 4 hours ago, it took me all 4 to install it and clean whatever else needed to be cleaned.
