I've been presented a challenge: I must build a gaming and general use PC for under $200 (this is a build for someone else). I knew that going with all new parts meant extremely low power. So..... time to use Craigslist (and possibly eBay).

3/17

So I recently found an old prebuilt that I'll use. I'm getting my hands on it tonight at 8PM (roughly 30 minutes from now). Only costed $50. Has a Sempron single-core, but that will be changed right away. It also comes with Windows 7, so.... yeah. I'll probably change the PSU out, and for sure I'll be adding a cheap GPU. The PSU for sure will be new, not too sure about the GPU.

Update 1: I have the computer in my hands. The guy apparently owns a business like I hope to. Really nice guy, even gave me a basic spec sheet (when I make a business, I'll give people a more detailed list). PS: He's a war vet, more points to him. I'll get a better look at the thing when I get things back to normal in my room tomorrow. PSU is definitely sketchy.

Update 2: Here's the spec sheet he gave me

Update 3: So I got in there, and it is HORRIBLE! The CPU heatsink is CAKED with dust, and the rest of the computer has all kinds of dust. Here's a few pics

Update 4: I've ordered the PSU, the EVGA 500B. I'm having a little bit of a hard time getting EVGA's B-Stock checkout to work, but I should have that ordered by tomorrow morning. I checked the bank account, it went through. HUGE thanks to tomtomj2 for helping me find that GTX 660. :D

Update 5: Some bad news, the CPU that I was planning on getting sold. BUT, I was able to find a Phenom II X2 B59 for $20. So I ordered that (it was on eBay) and now all the parts that I need for this scrap build are ordered!!

3/18

Got a few notifications today. A: The PSU and CPU have shipped, so there's that. B: My GPU still didn't process! So I reordered it. I can confirm that it is shipping today. I can expect to put parts together within the next week!

Parts List for everything I can identify so far:

If you want to buy this GPU (currently not in stock as of writing): http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=02G-P4-2661-RX

Update 1: My GPU has tracking info!

Update 2: My GPU and CPU will arrive the same day. Assembly will happen next Friday.

3/20

I got bored tonight, so..... I prepped for the new PSU by taking the old one out. There was a metal retention bracket that was specifically designed for that PSU. The OEM was Hipro, so while it might work for what the system currently is, it certainly won't do for a GTX 660.

Images of current work

Also, I did even more dusting, so now the system is about as clean as it's gonna get until I get the Phenom, when I'll clean the CPU cooler and finish it off. I ended up with 6 wipes in the trash or so, it was really disgusting in there.

3/21

Big news: I checked the shipping status on the CPU, and it's coming today unexpectedly. Totally fine, I definitely wanted this part ASAP so I wouldn't have to worry about it as much. I'll be using some of my leftover Cryorig thermal compound, so you can't get after me about that.

Update: The CPU got here about 4 hours ago, it took me all 4 to install it and clean whatever else needed to be cleaned.

All Current Work

3/22

Came home today, the package got here!

Pro: It's here.

Con: It's a W1. :/

They sent me the wrong one. Oh well. I can live with it. It works, so once I get the 660 I'll see if I need to send it back.

Pictures!

3/24

The GPU arrived today. I finished up building it, now I need to do some testing.

Here are the pics of the final build

Something I should mention: The system only has 2GB of RAM! LOL!

Tests needed to be run:

  • Minecraft (he plays MC a lot, deal with it) - Performed MUCH better with the new GPU than with the iGPU.
  • Fire Strike - Result: 3,821
  • Unigine Heaven Results will be posted soon.
  • Unigine Valley Results will be posted soon.
  • Userbenchmark - Results

At this point, I'm just running Valley for a little while.

Temperatures:

CPU: 48C (idle) // 58C (load)

GPU: 43C (idle) // 77C (load)

Final Update!

I'm working on the completed build. :D

Here it is!

Hurah!

Sadly I can't view Imgur pictures right now. School Chromebook reasons.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

:(

What site can I use that you can view?

JAShadic 1 point 37 months ago

I... honestly don't know. My school keeps blocking proxy after proxy and some unrelated sites get blocked because of it.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Does photobucket work rn?

JAShadic 1 point 37 months ago

Eh, I'll just wait until I get on my grandpa's computer tomorrow. I do want to view Jipster's build log as well.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

By then I'll have another update, as that's when I get the power supply so I can turn on the thing. Lol

:O

tomtomj2 9 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

As long as that W1 doesn't explode you're good.

tomtomj2 9 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Actually send it back regardless or ask for a partial refund, you're getting ripped https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-100w10500kr

almost $20 cheaper

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yeah, I'll see if they'll let me have a partial refund. I cannot send it back unfortunately, since I have a deadline to get this system done, and I know if I send it back I probably won't be seeing the B1 until a week afterwards. :/

piemancoder 1 point 37 months ago

Nice idea. Can't wait to see what you find. I want to try this someday, do you have any tips?

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

If you're buying a complete system to renovate:

  • Replace the PSU if it isn't recent and/or decent.
  • If the CPU isn't at least dual-core, find a better CPU on the same socket that you can afford.

And that's all I can think of.

tomtomj2 9 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

So for $150, all you need is a new CPU, PSU, and GPU

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yup.

tomtomj2 9 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

What CPU do you plan on using as the replacement?

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

I found a Phenom X2 for $20.

tomtomj2 9 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

You made sure the Mobo is the right socket?

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yup. The Sempron 140 is an AM2+/AM3 CPU (the one in there currently). I checked the posting (Phenom X2) and it said it was an AM2+/AM3 CPU.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

That's quite a profile pic.

Im back America! :P

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

So, hows the build going?

Update!

JAShadic 1 point 37 months ago

I should do something like this when I get around to building my PC. Powerful at a cheap price.

tiny_voices 4 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Sucks that that phenom doesn't unlock to a quad core. I got lucky with my free phenom 2 x2 550 unlocking to an x4 including the extra cache and over clocking to 3.5ghz.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

:/ I doubt that the motherboard would even be able to do that in the first place.

tiny_voices 4 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Ahh yeah oem boards don't have that ability.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Oh well. I know for a fact the next upgrade for this system will be to a newer CPU, motherboard, and (more) RAM.

JAShadic 1 point 37 months ago

Still, a good starter system!

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yup.

commodore64 3 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

I should have done this for my brother. Instead, I built him a brand new pc with cryorig h7 cooler and i5-6500 that he barely uses/doesn't use to full potential. Welp.

IDEK. It was included with the computer. XD

Surprisingly, the system runs REALLY well. Even while benchmarking.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Any chance you could make a list of the parts and prices you've paid so far?

Yes, I'll make that and be back in a moment.

I love looking these super cheap used pc builds. (just finished rewatching all three seasons of scrapyardwars for maybe the third time. check linustechtips if you havent watched them).

Yeah, Scrapyard Wars was sort of the inspiration for this kind of a build, instead of a G3258 / no GPU build.

A great combo I'd recommend (yes I know you've already gotten most of the parts) would be a q6600 and a 7970.

Kinda too late, I've ordered a GTX 660 from EVGA's B-Stock, and a Phenom II X2 B59 from eBay for $20. Plus, I wasn't able to find an LGA775 system on craigslist, although I could have gotten a cheaper HP from Newegg with that. But, the system I got for $50 included the OS, so I can't really complain.

Thanks!
