Is this overkill?

Im pretty sure this psu is overkill but im not sure how well the pcpartpicker calculator works. Can someone recommend me a better and maybe cheaper PSU than this. I would prefer it to be gold certified and atleast semi modular, and great quality. Any recommendations?

First, we'd need your current PSU. And your Parts List. And location (USA, Canada, Germany...).

So, 550w should be enough if you're going to keep it to a single 970. Perhaps one of these: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/compare/evga-power-supply-220g20550y1,evga-power-supply-220gs0550v1,xfx-power-supply-p1550bbefx/

If you plan on SLI later, then that 850w would be a good spot.

Reposted this after correcting a rather silly error.

PCPP gives the maximum wattage estimate in the upper right corner of your parts list. If you click on the estimate, you get a breakdown of where the numbers came from, as well as a minimum wattage estimate.

The max is everything running full power at the same time, but uses the published power consumption for device and does not account for overclocking. This is a worst case load at stock speeds, so the PSU should be at least 100 watts higher, preferably more for reliability. The minimum number could be much LOWER than in reality. For my Groot build the min says 88 watts, but I've measured it as low as 45 at idle.

As your build is now, that PSU is a little big, but it allows the possibility of future upgrades including multiple GPUs.

This is why I shouldn't type when I'm tired haha. Brain thinks one thing but types another. And of course too late to edit it so I don't sound like a dummy too.
