1st Build - Need PSU advice... I'm lost...

Hello all,

HELP ME I'M LOST !!

I just don't know what PSU I'll need... PCpartpicker estimates my wattage at max 376W. I checked similar builds and most go for 600w. A friend of mine who's into PC building told me to go for 850max... and that 550 wouldn't run my R9 380X..

Please give me advice and recommend PSUs...

A good 550W PSU would be perfectly fine. Could even OC the 380X too. And if you're trying to build a quiet PC (which it seems like you're doing) a Corsair RMx/RMi would be a good choice. If you're not, the EVGA G2 550W works too.

Also, don't buy the PURE ROCK at $50.

Thanks 526christian

Sure about 550W ? :p I'm just so confused about all of it...

Any other recommandation to change the Pure Rock for another CPU cooler ?

Often, PCPP estimates are a little above what you're actually going to be demanding. Things like the motherboard or HSF coolers won't actually pull that much. A good 550W power supply will do the job fine.

The PURE ROCK is a decent choice when it's $30-$35 like it's supposed to be. You could wait for it to go back in stock at NCIX when it will go back to normal pricing. Or, at $20, you can grab this, which will be a very good alternative.

Awesome, thank you very much for the advice and the CPU cooler link :D

What do you think about Angry_Plzen's comment about a 650W PSU ? (maybe comment his comment :) )

They're probably suggesting it at least in part because it's pretty well priced right now. But a 550W is still sufficient nonetheless.

Well platinum rated PSUs can't be made without serious quality components, most come with 10 year warranties, so they'll last and protect your components

  • you don't need more than a 450 watt psu, but it's easier to find a good 550 watt.
  • the pure rock is fine if it's $30, not a penny more. at $50 it's just terrible
  • the motherboard choice is poor being that you can get the Z170 Pro4 for less. a better board for less money is win win.
  • ram price is poor for a 2133mhz kit also.

here's a better, smarter build:

as far as a psu, you will find the EVGA 650 GQ is a great price for a mid range psu right now at $69.99. you don't need a 650 watt at all, but no comparable 550 watt is cheaper so...

Thanks PureBlackFire :D

Thanks for everything, I didn't elaborate in the original post. Prices in France are so much different (especially higher...)... And I got great deals on second hand components (CPU, GPU, MOBO & RAM), wow I never realized how much second hand would end up in my PC ^ thanks to that I can reinject budget in that awesome case and a good PSU.

So 450W would be sufficient? Should I go for a good quality/budget friendly Gold PSU? I heard Bronze and Silver aren't that great...

efficiency alone has nothing to do with a psu's quality. there are silver and bronze rated psus that are far better than some 80+ gold psus.

Alright, so any good recommandations for a good/reliable but budget friendly PSU?

the new CX 550 should be around 80 euro in Amazon.fr. not much selection there either, but you won't need anything more.

Perfect I'll look into it :D
