Was originally going to get the gtx 1080, would like some thoughts on that. Also would like some estimated time frames on how long this system could last.

Build looks well thought out. For 1080p 144 Hz I'd stick with the 1070.

Future proofing is hard to predict. They could start coming out with games that need more than 4 threads and you'll wish you'd gone with an i7 or X99 build. If you are interested in VR soon you might consider the 1080. I think for the VAST majority of games this will be fine for the next 5 years or so.
