Linux Root Problem

So whatever you wanna do in linux- whether that's formatting your system, or intalling a new os, (that's what I want to do btw) require you to give the root password. For me, it asks for the "home" password and the ui is 1001 instead of 0. Also, I don't know it's password, therfore not being able to achieve any of my goals. Any help?

If you don't remember setting up a root user, try your own password. Otherwise tell us which distro you are using. Mabe this will help.
