Depends what games?

triple A titles, it's fine I guess for the really high end games if I can't get 60fps.

Erm, I don't know. I typically go med/high on games like R6S and AC:S to get around 60 at 1080p. So I don't know what luck you will have. I can sometimes get 144 at R6S med.

This is a generalization:

New AAA titles ->

  • GTX 1060: 1080p 60+fps
  • GTX 1070: 1080p 144Hz ; 1440p 60+fps
  • GTX 1080: 1440p 144Hz

I got a GTX 970 right now, which performs similar to a GTX 1060. I get 100-120fps in Battlefield 1 Beta (high settings) and 120+fps on Overwatch (Ultra settings, not Epic settings)

So, right now, even the GTX 1060 does 100+fps. The question is, will it do so on AAA titles in 2 years? (Just have in mind, that Overwatch isn't a demanding game at all for nowaday-standards)
