Why is the build number on my desktop?

I built a pc back in March 2016, and It has worked amazing since then. It still works, but there is something strange now. After the last Windows update a few days ago, in the lower right hand corner of the desktop has the build number. Like how it did before I activated the os. It says: Windows 8.1 Build 9600 It's not a problem, I just want to know what caused it.

Is your OS legit? Where did you buy it?

It means your copy is not active... If you bought it legit and have a key, re enter it... If you never bought it or grabbed it from a red it posting or some other non official place, then congratulations, you got ripped off
