Slow internet speeds

So my brother just got a gpu (gtx 1060) and it blocks off his second PCI-E slot (microatx motherboard) that his wireless adapter was in so he removed it and ended up getting a a usb instead. The one he got is the Netgear AC600 Dual band and he has gotten very slow results, on steam we started a download and it peaked at 1.1 m/b but it even went down to 1-5 BYTES. We knew that a usb would give slower speeds but we did not expect it to be this drastic. Is there anything he can do to improve the speeds? If not then what is his best option for an upgrade?

Note: Drivers are up to date and we have very fast internet

Use Ethernet.... Long Ethernet cables don't cost that much.
