There are a number of difference in the toplogy and layout and components used. Overall though from a performance standpoint and general overclocking stand point they are the same. Both outstanding.

The WS

Features

1.Dual Intel Lan with Intel server series NICs offering higher performance for heavy network loads

2.Offers integrated mSATA support onboard

  1. eSATA6G on the I/O backplane ( 2 ports )

  2. 2 fewer USB 3.0 ports

  3. More advanced secondary sata ports with a Marvell 9230 controller which is x2 PCIe compared to x PCIe on the Extreme. This is only important if you are heavily using storage outside of the primary SATA6G PCH / Intel ports.

  4. The WS has official Xeon support and also has a UEFI optimized for complex option roms ( generally found on high end add in cards like raid controllers etc )

The power section is similar and very high end but slightly less advanced than the extreme

The Extreme has a advanced topology design for high dram frequency and a few other very technical differences. For expert overclockers and tweakers these additional design refinements and differences can be valuable but for most enthusiasts they will not notice them. On the hardware side the capacitors are different 5K on the WS vs 10K on the Extreme the chokes are the same both rated for 60a and the are also more advanced on the Extreme but the WS is very good in this respect so it is really a situation of great to fantastic in regards to difference in these hardware components. Ultimately they come down to having comfort in that they are higher performing and provide better thermal efficiency.

The WS does offer an automated overclocking feature that the Extreme does not.

AutoTuning Overclocking – A hardware based firmware/software utility. This application can auto overclock your CPU through a carefully developed automated routine which includes stability testing, voltage adjustment and temperature monitoring. This means your overclock is specific to the margin of your CPU as well as the thermal performance of your CPU cooling solution. When tied in with optimized voltage policies which maintain an adaptive vid for superior efficiency and as well as cap the voltage that can be supplied you end up with a very balanced and efficient overclock that also offers improve performance and optimally takes advantage of your investment in a Z87 board, K series CPU and solid cooling solution.

The Extreme offers a present method called CPU Level Up which will allow you to select 4.2Ghz, 4.4Ghz or 4.6Ghz.

The Extreme offers

1.802.11AC with Bluetooth

  1. More USB 3.0 8.0 ports

3.OC Panel header support ( the OC Panel comes included with the Extreme )

For the Front Base or OC Panel https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/OC_Panel/ http://pcdiy.asus.com/2014/01/rog-front-base-the-ultimate-5-25-bay-accessory-ces-2014/

Both board features ASUS Z87 class leading features such as

Fan Xpert II - Advanced fan control offered per header as well as offering 3 and 4 pin support. The advanced control parameters are offered in both the UEFI ( BIOS ) as well as with the OS. There are also great automatic profiling options which will automatically measure the fans for their min and max levels of operation. This allows for ideal profiling of the fans ( such as quiet or standard ) which are based specifically on your fans

USB 3.0 Boost - A feature that allows the bus protocol for transmission to be shifted to different operating modes. This can allow flash drives or high speed external devices to have much higher levels of performance.

USB Charger+ - An advanced quick charging option for mobile devices ( tablets, smartphones, eReaders etc ) It works under varied S states ( so sleep, hibernation or even with the system power off ). In addition it provides quicker charging times.

USB Bios Flashback - A specialized hardware implementation that allows for direct UEFI ( bios ) “flashing” updating or recovery. It can be executed even if the system fails to power on or post. Additionally it can be executed without a CPU, Memory / RAM or Graphics Card being installed. All that is required is a PSU to be connected and powered on.

There are other differences but those are the most important. Either which way both are outstanding boards.

Hope this helps!

  1. its a rog board
  2. more usb 3.0 ports
  3. I probably won't need the server stuff
  4. the extreme is more advanced
  5. the extreme looks better and it goes better with the ram I'm getting
  6. it comes with the monitor thing (don't remember what its called)
