Help with UPS/Voltage Regulators

So a few weeks ago my cheap o' voltage regulator which I had with me for over 3 PCs now started emitting this ghastly smell whenever I was gaming on my new rig. I had to throw it out given that it could kill my rig at some point.

Can anyone give me some tips on how to choose an voltage regulator/UPS for a gaming setup like this?

Thanks :) Read the article but aside from that do you have any personal tips?

As the article points out, it depends on user's priorities.
If protection is paramount, damn the costs and possible noise level, an online/double-conversion UPS is the way to go.
