Windows 10 - PC occasionally boots up way faster than usual and then I lose basic Windows functionality like opening the start menu.

Recently my PC has been booting up suspiciously quick, way faster than it should. In fact it boots up instantly. Its almost like the PC isn't shutting down at all. Whenever this happens I seem to lose some basic control of the windows UI, I cant open the start menu, cant access volume controls from the taskbar etc. Since I cant access start menu I have to shut down using ALT F4 whenever this happens. It doesn't happen every time I boot up, just sometimes. Everything else works fine I can open programs from the desktop run them fine and all that. So what could this be Is it just a windows 10 bug? Is my PC not shutting down correctly?

Turn off fast boot. Nothing but issues with it on.

It's great in theory, but in practice it's awful. Processes get stuck, programs don't open, drivers don't properly (re)initalize, and on and on. Glad turning it off helped you fix your issues!

Keep in mind that some Windows Updates will re-enable it for some reason, so make sure you check it occasionally if you notice these issues return.

Yep, its just another example of Windows 10 trying to make your life more convenient but instead just causing more problems xD. I'll make sure it stays off, thx again!

Yes fast boot isn't stable, on my laptop it made it slower in a way you cant use it, now its off and im very pleased with it.

for me, after booting I have to wait a little longer for ethernet to catch up. I have a Samsung 850 evo and the pc boots up in roughly 11 seconds. I have windows fast boot enabled but gigabyte ultra fast boot disabled. I think it might be windows with a problematic version of it or fast boot.

Sounds like it's not initializing all of the processes / services. Might be worth trying to do a fresh install to see if this solves the problem.

Wait for 3-5 minutes after booting. Does this happen?

Press Alt+F4 to bring up the shutdown menu, select Shut Down, hold down Shift and click OK. Let your system shut down and power off, then turn it back on.
