am I able to buy a windows 8/8.1 key which is cheaper, install windows 10 and use that key instead to activate my PC? windows is expensive af

The legal versions of Win8/8.1 has prices similar to Win10.
e.g. At the time of this post, 32¢ price difference according to PCPartPicker.

Any legit 7/8/8.1 key will work for Windows 10 as long as you aren't jumping 'tiers' of windows. IE: Win 7 Pro -> Win 10 Pro, Win 8 Home -> Win 10 Home, etc
