1000-1200 College Student Gaming PC

Groose

Hello, I am relatively new to this and I wanted to know some recommended parts for a build with this price range. I know that graphics cards are expensive right now, should I go for a middle/lower tier one until prices drop and have an otherwise higher quality build?

Thanks

Edit: I realized I left out some details/should have made things clearer.

Budget: $1000-1200, peripherals/accessories/OS not included (planning on Windows 10)

Purpose: Mostly gaming, may need it for some CAD work later

Details: I live far from my college so I would like the build to a bit sturdy/able to survive long car rides.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cMHMvn Wifi, 16gb of ram, top tier mainstream AM4 CPU, tho the GPU is entry-lvl to mid-range, but should be able to play 95% of games on 1080p60 high. on more multi-threaded CPU focused tasks, like blender CPU render, the r7 2700x should be able to breeze trough it without any trouble. includes operating system in price. +it has wifi!

You could go with a smaller case, such as the Elite 110, if you selected a shorter graphics card. I went with the larger Elite 130, to leave more future graphics card options open. (The quality 550W PSU should also accommodate your choice of typical single-GPU cards.)

Micro-ATX option:

This micro-ATX option is slightly larger (though not as much as you might think). The advantage here is that this motherboard offers 4 RAM slots, so you can start off with a 2x4GB kit, and have an easier upgrade path to 16GB (or more). The mini-ITX motherboard would only offer 2 slots, so an upgrade would require replacing a 2x4GB kit with an expensive 2x8GB kit, rather than simply filling previously unoccupied slots with another 2x4GB kit.

Additional notes:

  • I left room in the budget to upgrade some pieces to better tailor to your needs (for gaming, what sorts of games do you play, and what is your desired balance between resolution/eye candy/frame rate?). Additionally, you didn't mention if you need an OS and/or peripherals.
  • If it were me, I'd bump up the RAM to 16GB, and move up to a 1070, but I'd rather leave room until I have a better grasp of your intended uses.
  • I'm not sure if you spend summers close to campus or if you need to move around more, so I went with smaller case options that still accommodate full-size parts, save for the motherboards (obviously) and large CPU coolers (which aren't really necessary for the i5-8400).
  • Adjust storage according to your preferences, since you know your exact capacity needs better than I do.

Wow, thank you for your detailed reply. I realized quickly after posting that I forgot to mention some details. I have most peripherals and was planning on getting a windows 10 OS license. The college I go to is half the US away from my home so a sturdier build for long car rides would be appreciated.

As for gaming, I play a lot of league, Rainbow 6 Siege, and RPGs like the Witcher etc. I mainly wanted a rig that would run these games at a higher level of graphics and performance.

Thanks again!
