ASRock Thunderbolt 3 AIC causing problems with X299 Taichi XE

Hello guys,

After 20 years working on Macs, I made the leap to PC. Built my first machine a month ago and haven't looked back, although it's taken a bit of getting used to Windows. But, all is good. Mostly..

I am using the machine for video, 3D and audio. I got a thunderbolt card so that I can run my Universal Audio Apollo Twin (Thunderbolt) to power my speakers, and for audio input.

But I'm having problems.

See my config below.

The problems have been varying:

  1. Connected the card to PCI (on my MB, I can connect to any PCI for this card according to manual), and to the header. Started machine. Installed drivers, enabled Thunderbolt in the BIOS. Noticed the machine took much longer to boot. But eventually, it worked. I was able to make my Thunderbolt Apollo Twin work! But, noticed quickly something was off. Machine seemed slower than normal. I tried a restart, but then I couldn't get back into Windows. Screen just black. Seemed like no output from my GPUs..

  2. Tried to move the card to the 2nd PCI slot (between the GPUs). Got it to work, but the 2nd GPU (1080ti) no longer could be detected, plus keeping the card inbetween two cards wouldn't be ideal from a airflow perspective I assume. Either way, tried a restart and same issue, couldn't get back in..

Only way was to pull the card out again..

No idea how to fix this. Since I sort of got it to work, I believe there must be a way..

Any suggestions?
