Looking into buying a iMac. Listing says no HD or operating system but powers on. Obviously I would need to buy Mac operating system but what else would I need for the HD. Any suggestions

What year iMac? There's a big difference between say an early 2009 and a 2015. In general, the older iMac's used ordinary SATA hard drives and you can install a 3.5" SATA HDD, or a 2.5" SATA SSD with an adapter such as icy dock.

The iMac is just needs a hard drive (check if it needs a 2.5 or 3.5 inch drive) and a operating system. That's pretty much it to make it work.
