Absolutely, any only HDMI 1.4 supports bandwidth up to 4K 60 I believe, And HDMI 2.0 Does 8k 60.

I don't really understand what certain cables can do etc. I heard you need vga for 144hz, if hdmi works for 75hz then whats the limit for an hdmi?

HDMI 1.4 can do 1080p 165+, 1440p 165 (80% sure), and 4k 60. Unless yo want 4k 120 Hz or 1080p 240 any HDMI works fine. VGA can do 1080p 30 at max.

So if I want for example 1080p 240hz what cable would I use?

HDMI 2.0. You should always use the lest HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 if you buy a new cable.
