Why did Intel release the "F" variants!?

Intel quietly released alternate versions of some of their 8th and 9th gen cpus. But beside them not having intergrated graphics, Why would anyone even consider buying one?

Your Intel.

You have a massive shortage of 14nm CPUs

You are throwing away CPUs that don't hit the cut due to bad iGPUs (can't just disable the bad cores and shift it down the product stack).

You decide that is literally wasting money, and laser off the dead iGPU to sell it.

They did the exact same thing with the i5-2500k vs 2550k. Really zero reason to buy the more expensive iGPU less CPU. It's really for anyone trying to get the highest possible overclock if youre lucky.

Ryzen CPU don't have an IGPU and it doesn't stop people from buying them.

But they do have an interesting point in their favor for both locked and unlocked models.

The disabled IGPU increases surface area in contact with the heatspreader and is no longer pulling power.

So you get better thermals and power usage profiles giving improved boost clocks and overclocking potential.

These are a way for Intel to keep from moving product down the line when a IGPU doesn't make the cut for higher binned chips.
