Windows 10 created split boot. System is on NVME SSD, boot files on SATA HDD drive - how to fix ?

I did not know this has happened until I disconnected the HDD.

Went through recovery process, the automated option cannot fix the computer, command line bootrec /fixmbr worked, but bootrec /fixboot failed. After chkdsk c: /f, and running bootrec /fixboot again it completed succesfully, but windows still won't boot and error is:

Windows still wont boot, the error is An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart.

Btw. it can still boot if SATA HDD is attached.

I wonder how many people actually have split boot without knowing about it and only find out when one component out of two fails or they need to upgrade.

That is why you install windows with only your boot drive connected.

This is what I did, hope it helps someone:

Connected HDD back and booted Windows, opened disk manager and shrank the SSD partition by 1GB and created new partition in the newly created 1GB space. Marked it as active (i.e. bootable) and named it System Reserved, no drive letter assigned. Shutdown Windows.

Booted Ubuntu from USB key and mounted both boot partitions and copied content of HDD boot partition to SSD, the device names may vary:

mkdir /tmp/sdboot mkdir /tmp/nvboot sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /tmp/nvboot sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /tmp/sdboot sudo cp -r /tmp/sdboot/* /tmp/nvboot sudo shutdown now

Disconnect HDD, start PC, voila !

I wish Bill Gates burns in hell for the crap we have to go through.
