Motherboard is VERY low end and I would not be comfortable putting it under the load of gaming and the RAM is out of stock.

What kind of games are you planning on playing the most?

Battlefield 4, Far Cry 3 and some of the new games coming out.

This build is remarkably similar to the one I currently have and 6 months on I have 3 regrets;

only have a 500w PSU: sure it will run the system no problem but gpu upgrades are non-existent and overclocking headroom is minimal.

I did not get a good cooler from the start: the stock cooler is fine for the majority of games but some games will reach the 60'c max in a matter of minutes, one of which is BF3. I'm now having to buy a new cooler and preparation solutions to remove the old paste making it a little more expensive the replace the cooler than if I had just got one from the start. Don't go halfhearted as one of the only benefits a 6300 has over an equivalent i3 is that it can be overclocked.

And finally the choice of CPU: while researching I wouldn't believe a dual core like an i3 could be on par with a 6 core so I went with the 6300 and hey it works but now I understand why number of cores is not as important as the speed of fewer cores for gaming.

So now I'm left with a PC that requires more money to cool, has limited overclocking headroom (without spending more on a better PSU), no more gpu upgrade room (although I'm counting on maxwell bringing something mid/high end to the table) and no cpu upgrade path that would be worth while. I live, I learn. By trying to pinch pennies back, I ended up making a PC that would be more expensive to upgrade later.

The reason I ask what kind of games you like, is because most of the time a similar priced i3 would perform about the same but has the added bonus of far better upgrade paths on decent motherboards that are slightly cheaper than decent AM3+ boards. And considering AM3+ is a dead socket but lga1150 has future cpus planned on current MBs, the future of the PC is built with this in mind. Also remember that windows is tied to the motherboard, so replacing the motherboard may also require the purchasing of a new windows licence. An i3 and its upgrades all the way to yet unreleased i7s do not need an cooling beefier than the stock cooler, especially broadwell.

Now where I'm at odds in what to advise is that while most games don't really see much difference between an i3 and 6300 (in FC3 its only a couple of fps), BF4 is a mantle game and has had optimisations for AMD multicores allowing it to perform within about 7 fps of an i5! An i3 can be used to lay bf4 no problem its just that AMD offers much better performance per £ in MANTLE games.

As nice as it may seem to stick to a nice round budget of 500 spending an extra say £10/£20 will not be missed if it leaves you peace of mind and solid parts.

Do you recommend any RAM (4GB is ok)

  • 72 months ago
  • 1 point

Yup. Any ram as long as it's 1600Mhz Cl9 and 1.5V. Just spend the extra and get 1 stick of 8Gb ram.

  • 72 months ago

I've found 8GB RAM which is DDR3-2133. Is 2133Mhz better or worse?

I'm scared of the mobo as well. Unfortunatly it seem there's no Micro ATX 970/990 chipset mobos over there. U may wanna consider moving up to ATX to have acessability to the 970/990 chipset to which u can overclock and power the 6300 more effectivly. but that require a diff case also.

You can also save a couple £ if you went with a toshiba HDD the regular evga 500 watt psu and move to a radeon 7870 over the 270x, pretty close to same anyways, but then again thats just pinching pennies.
