Hey everybody,

I will be using this pc for work and for gaming. I will be doing some heavy coding as well as minor data visualizations at home. Even though at work I always use our servers for heavy simulations, but it would be nice to be able to run smaller tests at home as well. Also gaming mostly in such genres as RTS (sc2), TBS (civ5), and top-down RPGs will be taking place.

---Questions---

  • PSU - is EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W any good? The price is quite low for it in comparison to other 750w
  • Case Cooling - since GIGABYTE 290 runs hot...(yes, not a TriX) do you think I need to get a couple of case fans right away?

Currently I am on a tight budget and cannot go beyond $1500 at the moment (+ there are taxes...). However, I don't want to compromise on quality and reliability of the components. As a result, I am willing to spend more on some of them for a better build quality. Please feel free to post your suggestions on how to improve / reduce the cost or just share some feedback :)

Thank you!

Have a look at the 290x http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-R9-290-vs-AMD-R9-290X/2171vs2166

OS: Ik we all hate windows 8 but its cheeper and then just run http://www.classicshell.net/

HDD: Id use a 500g EVO for games, boot drive, etc and keep the WD Blue for the workstation

Motherboard is a bit overkill for your uses unless your making advantage of the SupremeFX

Thank you for your feedback!

  • GPU - I looked into OC abilities of 290 and 290x. 290 turned out to be a much better at OC and reaching almost the same benchmarks as overclocked 290x. As a result $200 difference won't justify the cost.

  • OS - I am actually provided with a free copy of Win 7 or 8 by my workplace, so don't have to worry about that ))

  • HDD - I am not sure if I can handle 500gb EVO at the moment, may be later when will have enough money

  • Mobo - SupremeFX is actually one of the major reasons why I want to get this mobo. I was debating between buying a dedicated sound card or going for a better on board soundchip. I already have a good set of non-pc speakers and planning to invest into a bigger sound system later on.

HDD/SSD : Id at least put in a 250g if your installing games

Since I already included 1tb WD blue, would it make sense to install games on ssd? I wouldn't think there is much of a performance boost O_o

Combined with the gpu I think it would make a great performance change in VM when the 8G cant handle multi tasking

Hmm...being able to run VMs better is tempting. I certainly will consider 250gb ssd. Thanks!
