ASUS H97 Plus Onboard audio question

I looking at buying an ASUS H97 Plus. It says that it supports up to 7.1 audio. Is that through HDMI only? The back of the board has blue, green and pink ports which the manual says is line in, line out and mic respectively. Further in the manual it says that for 5.1 audio these ports can be used for rear, front and base/center speakers. How are these changes made? In the bios or windows? The manual doesn't mention anything about it. Anybody who can provide some input on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Explained in complete detail on page 1-14 of the manual.

I seen that. I'm just wondering how the board knows it's not a mic but a base/center speaker. Is it automatic or do I have to change things in the bios?
