opinions cheap vs expensive for NAS/plex box

Budget: ~$1,000

Location: USA

Use (Gaming, Rendering, etc): NAS and Plex -- box will be on 24/7 and must hold a minimum of 8 3.5" HDD (will be a combo of new WD red drives and old WD green drives). Will being using snapRAID for some safeguard (currently using unraid but want to move away from it). Will be a plex server and client (directly connected to tv via hdmi). Will serve to iOS devices and to raspberryPI running plex connected to another tv. My understanding is that some amount of transcoding will need to be done for the iOS devices which is cpu intensive / also snapRAID is cpu intensive which makes me think the i5 will be better but maybe its still overkill? Any suggestions /ideas are welcome. Thanks

Peripherals required (monitor, keyboard/mouse, etc): none

Operating System required: ubuntu / linux

Pump that CPU up. Get an i5 4690. You've got a lot of room to work with. Aside from that, the rest really doesn't matter.

thanks ill look into it -- any $ under the ~1000 goes to 3TB red drives which is why i was trying to stay as cheap as you think would still work for minor trans- codes.

no gaming, no rendering -- just output of 1080p video streams and data storage

mainly looking for cpu suggestions (g3220 or i5??) and motherboard suggestions.

Thanks though
