You COULD potentially drop intel for a AMD and hopefully upgrade that 290 to a 290x. That performance boost (I believe 5/10%) will hopefully override the Potential drop in performance during gaming (Which I think I read would be a few frames. Although I could be wrong)

Hmm, but what about CPU intensive games? Wouldn't the FPS be bad on those?

Depends on the game. I play civ 5 and keep 60 fps most if not all (except for occasional dips during after the game is over gameplay)
