Newbie wants to build system and needs help!!

David reporting in, I've decided I want to build my own system and want to begin with MB recommendations first. I am not a poweruser and not a "Gamer" I do want to watch bluray 1080p content on my system and I do a lot of spreadsheet work at home. This will be a home desktop system and I want the motherboard and cpu total cost to be less then $250.00. Here is what I would like to have in a MB

01 No liquid cooling 02 No raid need 03 At least 1 hdmi output and 1 usb 3.0 port 04 No multi-monitor needed 05 64 bit and be able to have at least 16 gb of DDR3 ram 06 I want the mb cpu combo to be able to play dvds without the need of a videocard 07 On board audio - Don't want a soundcard. 08 Would be nice if the combo was AMD!!

As you can tell I'm not a geek and some of the requirements may seem strange to you! Any help would be greatly appreciated - David

  • Select processor first. Then decide/list features expected of mobo.

Your options are to go either Intel or AMD.

Here's the AMD build.

And Intel.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Type Item Price

Motherboard ASRock H97M-ITX/AC Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard $88.98 @ Newegg
Memory Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory $36.99 @ NCIX US
Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $51.46 @ Amazon
Case Thermaltake VL520B1N2U Mini ITX Tower Case w/220W Power Supply $64.60 @ Mwave

As you can see, they both have a DVD player, onboard wifi and are mini-Itx(smallest for factor). That's where the similarities end. Intel has a better CPU performances while D has better GPU performance. This means that AMD can play games on low better while Intel does multimedia tasks better.
