Gateway FX "Harvester Build"

Hello all -

So - after 6 years of gaming my Gateway FX6800-01e developed swollen/woofed caps and a hard drive crash that are screaming: "replace me now!"

Having always in the past schlubbed over the big-box and partook of the on-hand wares, I decided enough is enough. I want some control here.

Not having unlimited cash (who does?) I plan to harvest what's still decent and/or recently replaced - so included in this build are a few "keepers"

These items (or near enough) are shown in the build list - as I wanted to ensure compatibility. I hate last minute surprises...

The keepers are as follows:

1 Storage HD (almost 24 hours of use on it as of now...)

2 The case & case fans

3 Video Card (good and not horribly old yet, but could be better and easily upgraded later)

4 Optical Drive (doesn't matter & can be upgraded easily if required)

This violates my budget a bit, but can probably pull it off.

I'd really appreciate any comments - especially if harsh...

Thanks.

I would recommend you get an SSD and move up to Windows 8.1, put the OS on the SSD for a much faster boot. That's problem the only vital upgrades I can see, an over all great PC.

If you reuse your parts, here is the performance you can get for what you would have spent in your build. Board is off ebay, a few at or around that price, at other stores as well.

Thanks for the feedback guys; going to try to find the $$ to start with something that can later be upgraded to include both the SSD and Crossfire, even though it may mean my existing Video Card may be shelved for later use (to play movies in the living room comes to mind since the old laptop in there just went down for the count also.)

Build is complete and very happy - used a couple parts from the old machine but found out at first build attempt that the gateway case, in spite of it's size, was not ATX compatable - so added a mid tower and fan to the list:

Now just saving the $$ for the SSD and Crossfire graphics cards -

Thanks again!

PS: Salvaged component part numbers have been updated to be 100% accurate.
