Feel free to change the case but this one has good ratings and fits the video card.

I don't need an r290. for video card gtx770 is plenty for my needs so I don't want to spend more on Tue video card. SSD I also don't need.

for ram i was at possibly swapping the ram for

Corsair XMS 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

  • 1 point

If you want to play the newest games then you'll need a 290. If this computer isn't for gaming then you should get an integrated graphics card instead of a dedicated one.

I didn't add an SSD. You're best off with my memory as it is 2 X 4GB rather than 1 X 8GB (more sticks is better).

  • 1 point

i saw that the 290 runs hot when compared to the gtx770. Not to mention the price difference aswell. I dont know i can go with either if you give me more information about the 290. I plan to play games like BF4 and GTA5, and Unreal Tournament when they come out.

and yeah about the ram i was just looking and saw the reason why 2 sticks are better than 1 and its because of the CAS.

The original 290 and 290X ran hot and loud but these new card are as cool and quiet as the 780ti. Here's another option for you - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-1003612sr

It's $20 more than the 290 but gives almost the same gaming power as the 780ti.

Here's a benchmark for this card and other cards for BF4 - http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/03/11/sapphire-radeon-r9-290x-tri-x-oc-review/3

that 290x is way out of my budget because i´m not in the UK and it´s over $500 which is way too much. I´ll stick with that 290 you posted.

ok guys i have a dilema between choosing my RAM these are the choices i have come down to:

https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/compare/crucial-memory-blt8g3d1608dt1tx0%2Ccrucial-memory-blt8g3d1608et3lx0%2Cgskill-memory-f312800cl7d8gbxm%2Cgskill-memory-f314900cl8d8gbxm/

out of these 4 im leaning towards the:

G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory since it has a:

8/1866 x 1000 = 4.2872

which is amazing for this price at $90.

You really won't see any performance different between 1600 and 1866. I'd stick with Kingston Blue for $76.

  • 2 points

Or, if you can find it, cheaper 1600/9 CAS RAM.

  • 1 point

Should i really go with the 500w PSU or go the safer route and get the 600w version for an extra $15

  • 1 point

If you get the 290X the wattage goes to 488 so you'll need more to be safe. This power supply is 600 watts and semi modular - https://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cx600m

  • 1 point

Just noticed that this is the power supply you already have, so yeah go for that.

  • 1 point

Hmm i´m kinda considering the 290x since its only $20 more. Problem is i was also thinking about selling the voucher for the 3 games so i can reduce the cost of the build since i dont really want any of those games.

its a tough decision but at the same time it´s a possible $100 or more i can shave off the cost of the build if i can sell the voucher.

290x

397.57 AUD = 377.0274 USD

notice it says AUD and that website is from the UK which is EURO. The conversion from EURO is

397.57 EUR = 538.8662 USD

thats a $161.83 difference in price. so unless i´m doing this conversion wrong i am not forking over an extra $181 to upgrade from the 290 to the 290x.

  • 1 point

Ah, that makes sense. It was strange the an upgrade to the 290X was only $20.

Was wondering if you can help me choose the case for the build you recommended with the 290. Here´s the problem i will be traveling back to the US next month and will buy all the parts minus the case because the case is too big to bring on the plane. So i have to purchase the case where i currently live which is in the country of panama.

anyways here´s the link of the store in panama with the cases they sell. btw the cases over here in panama cost on average about $20-$40 more than US prices.

http://www.yoytec.com/index.php/cPath/26_32

would really like to stay within the same budget for the case of possible.

A case with one 2.5 bay is prefered for my laptop hdd.

  • 1 point

For the case it really depends on personal preference. You just have to make sure that it can fit the video card (305mm in length). On some cases you'll just need to remove a drive bay to fit it while on others it can fit with drive bays.

  • 1 point

the thing is that over here in panama the humidity and room temperatures are a lot hotter than in the US since there is no A/C and have to rely on household fans to keep me cool. So Yeah no a/c so room temperature is higher than in the US as a result.

I need a case with the best air flow and as many fans as possible with at least one 2.5" slot without breaking the bank either.

if you can help me with that I would really appreciate it.

  • 1 point

don't go for an r9 290x. the r9 290 performs almost just as well and is vastly cheaper.

i have the r9 290 vapor-x from sapphire and it absolutely crushes my whole gaming library. but nVidia is pretty good as well, but the 770 is a little older so performance isn't that great compared to the newer cards. for obvious reasons.

what is your budget, by the way? and what kind of performance were you hoping for in terms of gaming? (i.e. max settings all games, 1080p, constant 60FPS, etc. etc. etc.)

well after further researching and some thinking about my heat worries in panama I have decided to get your identical build with the 500r and just bring the case on the plane and pay the $40 bag fee. my only concern now is will the 500r keep my temperatures down. I really don't want to invest money on cooling fans and water cooling. I plan on doing that down the road but not right now due to being on a budget.

  • 1 point

With the $40 bag fee though you'll be better off getting the case in Panama. The one I chose isn't particularly great, just cheap. Here's a case on that Panama website that looks good (comes with one fan) - http://www.yoytec.com/product_info.php/cPath/26_32/products_id/10796

These are some cheap fans, only $4 after the rebate and they have great reviews - http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-fan-r4l2r20agr2

  • 1 point

hmm I don't know. I kinda fell in love with the 500r already. just has too much cooling expansion whereas the raidmax vortex has very little room for cooling expansion.

I don't know what to do which is why Im trying to play it safe and get a case with lots of cooling expansion because I have no idea how the room temperate over here will effect the build. last thing I want is to be worrying about heat issues. I am already thinking about the possibility of adding water cooling later on if the build gets too hot in panama.

If i had to take a guess Id say my room temperature in panama is easily 80f-85f and would probably be in the 90f-100f if not more. my laptop was hitting 50c at full load while playing games and that was with the case lid off and a household fan blowing air directly at it. Yeah thats how hot my laptop got in panama.

And I checked the airline and the bag fee is $30 not $40 which is reasonable.

Yeah, the 500R is great. It can hold the 290 without removing drive cages which is another bonus.

  • 1 point

I edited the last reply in case u didnt see the edits

  • 1 point

You'll be fine in that heat with just using fans, especially as this 290 is very cool and the case can hold so many fans in a bunch of places. It also comes with 4 fans so you may not need to buy more.

  • 1 point

so should I buy more fans or stick to the 500R stock case fans and the cpu cooling fan only?

I don't mind throwing in a $20-$100 fan budget into the build if I'm going to see significant cooling reduction if its going to help me sleep at night about not having heat issues.

If so can u tell me how many fans I need to buy and which ones are the best bang for the buck in the single digit price range. I know the case has like 10 fan slots but I don't know how many of each fan size it supports.

  • 1 point

You should only need 2 extra fans mounted at the top of the case. These are good - https://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-fan-r4s4s10akgp

  • 1 point

ok so here's my final build with the two fans. I put in the ram that I wanted since they look cool and I don't mind paying little more for better ram. same thing with the motherboard I want the best possible motherboard if its only a few extra dollars as well. and the case I don't like the white so I opted to pay the extra $5 for the black color instead.

overall I'm really happy with the build and I'm really excited and can't wait till next month to have it in my hands and start the project.

thanks for all your help man really I appreciate it.

well with the recent price differences I had to make some adjustments. I swapped out the mother board for the Z97m chipset. And I replaces the black case for the white case because of the $15 price difference. I'm still going to be holding out for the black case but if the white stasis at $100 ill have to get the white case. Hopefully the 290 drops back in price. was really mad when the price jumped an extra $23.

anyways this is the current build.

i swapped the asrock Z97m pro 4 motherboard for the MSI  Z97-G55 SLI since it costs $1 less and gives more USB ports and m.2 and has a lot more stuff.

I'm concerned about the 500w power supply not being enough for overclocking. I hope I didn't end up buying less wattage.

i see the sapphire 290 vapor x is only $57 more than the tri x version so should I get it?

I'm considering the vapor x If the price doesn't drop on the tri x and the power consumption is the same at 250 watts. not to mention I saw the benchmarks and the vapor x surpassed the 290x which is impressive to see.
