It doesn't need to be high capacity, I'll be mirroring the 1 TB drives and 1 TB is really all I need.

However I'd like it to be fast, near gigabit wire speed, and I don't mind spending more to get that. That's why I went a little over on the CPU and the memory.

The new Avoton platform is interesting:

(8 cores at 20 W TDP!!) but I'm concerned the single-threaded performance is lacking and since this will mostly be just a samba server, I believe the workload would be largely single-threaded. Plus I won't be using one of the most innovative and expensive components on that board, the 4 X 2.5 gig Ethernet.

Since it will be on 24/7, power consumption will be an issue. I understand the Haswell Xeons have excellent idle power consumption and I went with an 80+ Platinum power supply.

Extreme overkill?
