Can I reuse my Windows 7 Product Key for a Custom Built Computer?

Last year I bought a Windows 7 Pro key for my laptop which I had repaired. I am buying and building my first gaming rig soon, however I don't really want to spend the $40-100 over budget on a new operating system key. Is there anyway to reuse my Win7 Pro key for my custom gaming rig? I heard that it can be done but it will deactivate the license on the original computer it was installed on. If so this will not be a problem.

From legal standpoint,

  • If "Windows 7 Pro" was OEM, it is not transferable.
  • If "Windows 7 Pro" was full retail version, it is transferable.

You can legally download the Windows 7 iso file, which you can use to burn to a DVD disc. e.g. HeiDoc.net. Just make sure to download the version that you have the key for. e.g. Home Premium will not work on Professional nor Ultimate.

And how do you find the retail version to install in other computers? Can you give me a link or so? Thanks :)

you will have to hunt around online to find one... the only versions i've been able to find are OEM.
