Will my PSU (Corsair 500W ATX12V) support an Asus Geforce GTX 970?

Quick question to quell my doubts about upgrading. As far as I'm aware, the gtx 970 is an 8 pin, and my current power supply has a 6 pin connector+2 pin. I currently have that plugged into my current card (gtx 660) and I'm not using the two pin. So can I just combine the two to make an 8 pin? Is that the purpose of that specific connector or will I need a new PSU?

Yes, that's the plug's purpose.
