Trying to save money by reusing my existing cpu, motherboard and storage. Will this build work? Any parts that you would recommend changing/adding? Thanks

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/sjDjLk Dont know what your budget is or if you had both storage devices already. Included a liquid cpu so you can overclock and get some more life out of it and a 970 and a cheaper case, if size isn't a issue

I didn't notice there was a way to mark an item as purchased. I do prefer the looks and size of the phenom over the corsair. I have never used a liquid cooler before, will it fit in the phenom? Also is the 970 that much better than the 290? It's $100 more which I could use towards the liquid cooler.

I think the 290x and the 970 are almost on par.

He originally had a r9 290 which is a slightly better than gtx 770, the r9 290x is slightly weaker than a gtx 780 which is slightly weaker than a gtx 970. Theres a 1990ish difference in their Pass Mark score.

I would highly recommend a mid size tower if you want a liquid cooler, it might fit or might not, if it did it would be pretty tight fit. You don't need a $150 liquid cooler unless your seriously into overclocking or have a huge budget because that $100 could go somewhere else like the gpu where you would see significant results in game. Read my reply to siddo about the gtx 970 vs r9 290
