$1000 build, how do you think it will fair for 1080p gaming at max settings?

I'd recommend replacing the 280X with the R9 290.

Secondly I think you should try to upgrade to the Z97 mobo. Note that the Z87 mobo will need a bios upgrade to be compatible with the i5-4690k CPU. If you don't plan on overclocking you don't need that type of CPU cooler, you can get a little cheaper one like the 212 EVO for $30 or just use the stock cooler.

thanks for the info, I had no clue this board doesn't support overclocking.
