Trying to keep a First Build under $1k

I'm replacing my trusty 6-year old college laptop that finally wheezed its last after all the abuse I put it through. Figured I could get a lot further bang for my buck with a home-built desktop. Mostly gaming usage, though due to my limited hardware I'm used to playing everything with all the settings bottomed out.

A few notes: Most of my research so far has been based on Logicalincrements.com, so my current build hews pretty close to their Superb/Excellent level. I have no intention of playing with overclocking, so the i5 should be plenty. I'm not sure if I actually need a fan beyond the stock units? I have literally 0 knowledge of motherboards, just threw the Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H on there to get an idea of price. I was leaning towards Nvidia graphics, but I'm no longer certain that's necessarily the best choice in my price range. I'm having a very hard time choosing a case, though since is my first gaming rig I wouldn't mind something a little flashy, and I think I like white. I have a fantastic mouse, but I'll be needing a monitor and keyboard, and possibly speakers? I'm really hoping to keep the whole thing under $1k, opinions and feedback would be heartily welcomed.

Edit1: I'm thinking I like the NZXT H440 White case, and it's marked down 10 $100 (from around $140) for today only, wondering if I should pull the trigger on that or do more research...
