Help! Part Choice mistake?

evigandekat

So i bought these guys: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/evigandekat/saved/pcXhP6

they haven't arrived yet.

Then I realized the thing about the motherboard not supporting the BIOS.

I don't have another CPU that is supported by this MOBO.

Should i return the MOBO and get one that supports the i7 4930k?

Should I take it to a store and have them update the bios? (That's expensive, right?)

Or by some miracle is it possible this mobo and processor might work together?

Thanks

I just read on Tom's Hardware that you'll have to update the BIOS.

It's very possible that it's old information.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1430295/intel-i7-4930k-and-motherboard-asus-p9x79-bios-update-problem

it is generally support by now though, but if not it is very easy.

Thanks! That led me to this: http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/

Looks like you're right. I found some forum info on Tom's that said it required a CPU and the flashback was for un-bricking or something? no idea if that's even possible.

Thanks again!

that is not correct. the link you found is for the different mobo.

you need this, http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P9X79_LE/HelpDesk_Download/ there is the bios and you will need to flash that.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think you need to have a z97 chipset to overclock properly if you plan on doing that (which it seems you are with the 4930k) anyway, so you might as well get one that supports it as well. If you plan on doing that, please check on the forums and elsewhere on the net to see if I'm correct, as said I'm not entirely sure, it's just what I've been told.

Replying to my own post, but didn't want to risk you not seeing an edit.

Basically I'm wrong, don't listen to me.

lol. I hate it when this happens to me. I feel bad, being wrong and replying to your own comment hurts.

It does, but hey, I was only going by what I've been told, so it isn't entirely my fault.

no no biggy, just find it funny when it happens. everyone has it.

I am not planning on overclocking... and maybe that was silly of me to go with the 4930k, but i wanted 6 cores of hyperthreading, 64gb of ram possible, and there's no 4930 existing that i could find. i'm hoping to do video editing & possibly some 3-d Rendering. Would you have gone with a different processor/motherboard still?

Thanks!
