My son decided he wanted to go with PC gaming vs. spending money on an xbox one. After doing some research, it looks like the AMD FX6300 can give decent performance on current games close to 60 FPS under 1080p resolution. Not sure just how long this configuration will work but for around $500, not a bad price. I also configured an I5-4690k for a little over $700 but not sure my son could handle paying that much or if its any more future proof than the cheap build. Technically, my son already purchased the case and hard drive with gift cards he got for Christmas so were already done with $110 putting us left around $428. The case is a micro-atx form factor so that did prevent me from configuring the Gigabyte GA-970 A DSP3 which was recommended by JackFrags youtube video - see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WQxr59KRto (nice video for first time game builders)
Please let me know what you think about this cheap build below and if there are opportunities for cheap improvements more or less expensive. The motherboard is probably the biggest unknown I'm not sure about.
