X79 has just been superseded by x99 iirc so that might be a better route, dropped way down on the GPU front to make your indicated budget

Edit. Do you have hdd(s) to use? 250gig ssd is fine for boot and a working projects drive but I would think it'll get used up quickly given the size of hd video files if you've gotta store everything on it.

Thanks for the advice. I've a 2tb drive but it's old enough to replace, maybe as part of this build. I'm still confused about gpu priority for video editing, some say it's essential and some not. I'll be using premiere and after effects but no 3d effects or cgi. Thanks again, your list is much more efficient than mine!
