This is my build http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/JZcsCJ but I was wondering if I need the cooler, or if I need a better one. I have no idea about cooling this, and I'm not planning on overclocking it at all.
You cannot overclock that CPU so an aftermarket cooler is unnecessary, just use the stock cooler that comes with the CPU. The Z chipset motherboard is a bit pointless as well as 1) you cannot overclock the CPU and 2) it is Z87 not Z97.
What are the benefits of the Z97 over the Z87?
More recent chipset so longer support for it and legacy.
OK, what is legacy? Like the BIOS or is that something different?
The length of time that something will still be supported. Basically, the newer the product the longer the manufacturer and compatible components are going to have support.
OK thanks, so drop the cooler and switch to this? https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-z97sslikraitedition
If you are overclocking then you must need it.
