Cooler Master 212 EVO 80*c

I just built a system with this cooler and a 4790k. I was running it last night and getting a max of 60 C, the house is around 27 C. This morning I ran AIDA64 GPGPU benchmark and within two seconds the computer shutdown presumably because of thermal cutoff. I then took the 212 evo off and reinstalled it after cleaning the surfaces. I put a rice size line of the thermal compound that ships with the 212 evo. I then turned the computer back on and ran the aida64 stress test with stress cpu deselected and the temperature of the cpu got up to 81 C in less than a second then I stopped it and shut it down. Now I am back on my old computer writing this. Any ideas why it is so hot?

I was monitoring temperature with HWMonitor. Bios said CPU was 41 C after reinstalling 212 evo.

Edit: The 212 evo was always cold to the touch at the top. and warm near the bottom

That is normal for the 212 evo. My 212 EVO only hits 54-60C on typical loads, but during stress testing like P95 or aida64, my temps will hit around 70-81C. If you are hitting these high temps under gaming loads, then clean up some more or invest in another cooler.

I put a rice size line of the thermal compound

also if you made a line that is A LOT of thermal paste... more isn't better.

Even though it shut down due to thermal cut off in less than 2 seconds?
