I have a used installation disc of Windows 7 Home premium that I got at a yard sale, but nothing else. Should I just look up a code online or is the disc useless??

Disc by itself is useless.

Key generators are always illegal. Just for future reference. =)

even if he found a code online, it would need activation which surely would fail...

If that Windows 7 was a retail version, you could try phoning Microsoft and inform them that you have the disc but the product key was misplaced. Depending on who picks up the call, they may offer a discount price.
