Enthusiast AMD Ryzen Gaming Build

CPU/CPU Cooler

For the Enthusiast AMD build we selected the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 as our processor. To cool theR7 1700 while overclocking we selected the NZXT Kraken X62. The X62 is an excellent choice for our build aesthetically and will allow us to reach our maximum potential for overclocking without building a custom watercooling setup.


To allow overclocking on the processor, we set the parametric filters for ATX motherboards that support up to 64GB of DDR4 memory, multiple expansion cards, and crossfire or SLI functionality. For memory, we're filtering for the best-priced 2x8GB kit of DDR4 RAM with a heatsink. We've limited it to DDR4-2800 and DDR4-3000 as Ryzen CPUs scale well with higher frequency memory. At the current time, using memory rated over 3000mhz is not advised without doing extra research as DIMM support can be hit or miss. AMD is working on releasing additional BIOS updates to add better compatibility for higher frequency memory. Using the parametric filters this build will incorporate an SSD with at least 480GB of space and a minimum 3TB of mechanical storage at 7200rpm.


With this budget we decided to go all out on the graphics card. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 is one of the single best cards on the market right now. At 1080p or even 1440p you will not have any problems with AAA games and the 1080 is perfectly suited for VR gaming as well. When using a GTX 1080 you should consider stepping up your monitor to a 120/144hz screen for the best gaming experience.


All of our components are housed in the Thermaltake View 31 TG. This case has a comes included with LED fans, large tempered glass panels, room for enthusiast CPU coolers, watercooling radiators, and front panel USB3.0. For our power supply, we're using a parametric selection of well-reviewed fully and semi-modular units, all of which are 80+ Gold certified and provide more than enough power for this system while at stock clocks or overclocking.

I say this because he is choosing a black and orange gpu, a black and red mobo, and a semi modular psu isn't making the kraken scream aesthetics.

Does this build really need that water cooler or could I get away with a less expensive sort of cooler, especially if I won't be overclocking?

You shouldn't buy a cooler if you aren't going to overclock. The 1700 comes with a stock cooler.

Ryzen processors can draw a lot on heat, it woud be worth while buying a cooler.

The stock cooler definitely takes care of the heat if you aren't overclocking, so getting s cooler would be a waste of money. I overclock my 1600 with its stock cooler and it doesn't get very hot.

Stock cooler can even handle small overclocks apparently so unless you are doing high overclocks, the stock cooler should be able to handle it.

I've seen a few 3200mhz kits on the QVL of multiple motherboards. I think the Ryzen platform has matured to those speeds as a good base dependent on the XMP profiles.

Can anyone confirm that this is not a problem:

"The Thermaltake - View 31 TG ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 420mm long, but video cards over 278mm may block drive bays. Since the Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB WINDFORCE OC 8G Video Card is 280mm long, some drive bays may not be usable."

This is a good build except for that power supply. I would personally get a cheaper SSD, get a good air cooler like any of the really good Noctua coolers and get at least a 750W. A 550 is cutting it too closely to the power limit.

You are looking at under 250W and probably around 200W of power usage, that is not even close to 550W. Also you could even do SLI on with a that PSU and this build.
