Build Guide

Magnificent Intel Gaming Guide

by ThoughtA

NOTE: A more recent version of this guide is available here.

Description

Theme

This build follows a striking black and white color aesthetics. In light of that, a number of part selection decisions were influenced in pursuit of this aesthetic, while impacting cost and performance as little as possible.

CPU and Cooler

At this budget, we're running an i7-7700K. This quad-core CPU features an unlocked multiplier for easy and often significant overclocking. While not all games will benefit from overclocking, games like Overwatch can benefit significantly from a faster CPU. Overclocking can also help your CPU stave off obsolescence for a good while longer.

The i7-7700K also features Hyperthreading, which is Intel's name for its Simultaneous Multithreading. This allows your PC to use 8 threads across your four cores, which helps with some productivity tasks and is starting to help with certain games as well.

To make the most of the overclockability, we're adding the Deepcool CAPTAIN 240EX WHITE 240mm liquid cooler, which will really let you push the CPU.

Motherboard

We're using a parametric selection of motherboards that keep with a black and white theme. The parametric selection will actively choose the best-priced motherboard of the group. All motherboards in the group use the Z270 chipset, which allows the i5-7700K to be overclocked. Additionally, they all have 4 DDR4 DIMM slots and are capable of using the CPU's integrated GPU, in case you need to RMA your GPU or are waiting for a sale or upgrade of using the CPU's integrated GPU.

Memory

For memory, we're filtering for the best-priced 2x8GB kit of DDR4 RAM that would match a black and white build. Feel free to click the "From parametric filter" link to see the various options and pick a color that suits you.

Storage

We're also using a parametric filter that will actively select the best-priced SSD of roughly 500GB capacity. Additionally, we're including a 3TB mechanical hard drive in a parametric filter for things like storing media and extra games. Everyone's storage needs differs, so feel free to change the capacity to your heart's desire.

GPU

Our GPU is the very popular GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. This is currently one of the fastest single GPU video cards in the market - you may want to look into a 120-144Hz and/or 2560x1440 resolution monitor for this bad boy. The parametric filter is set for the best-priced 1080 Ti available, but feel free to click the "From parametric filter" link to browse our listing of 1080s Tis. For those interested in VR, the GTX 1080 Ti will have no problem playing any and and all applications currently on the market.

Case

All of our parts are housed in the gorgeous white and black Phanteks P400S Tempered Glass edition. This ATX mid tower case features a tempered glass window to show off the starkly contrasted black and white internals. Speaking of white internals, this case has white PSU shroud to hide any unsightly cables, and it conveniently matches our color scheme perfectly. It also features 2 USB 3.0 front panel ports, can fit pretty much any length video card, and has 2x 3.5" and 2x 2.5" bays.

You may also wish to check out the version of this case where the front is white and the PSU shroud is black.

PSU

Powering the build is a sparse selection of some of the most well-reviewed PSUs available - all without breaking the bank. All of them are certified 80+ Gold and either semi-modular or fully-modular.

A small point, but the cooler you list in the preface text (The Phanteks PH-TC12_DX_BK, is not the one you have in your build list.

fideloper 2 points 18 months ago

Any idea of either one of these coolers are more compatible than the other?

tysgaming 2 points 18 months ago

What tools would I need? I still have my Wrist wrap from my first build but anything else? My first PC Build didnt have a Liquid CPU Cooler or anything like that. It also came with Thermal Paste on it would I need to buy some paste for this one?

KurtSan 3 points 18 months ago

You should buy some Thermal Paste and some Thermal paste remover if you want to be extra careful.

maxmurdoch 2 points 18 months ago

Will this play games like Destiny 2 at > 60fps on ultra settings on a 4K monitor? And is there a more lowkey case I could use? I basically want the smallest, most discreet case poss. Thanks for your time!

georger2323 3 points 18 months ago

Yeah if GTA V almost does 4k maxed at 60 fps on the 1080ti than Destiny should definitely manage.

Lexingtron 3 points 18 months ago

It could run triple monitors at 60

maxmurdoch 1 point 18 months ago

Brilliant. Thanks. One other thing: other than thermal paste, are there any subtle things I need to buy? Wires or cable ties or things like that? I've bought a flash drive so I can install windows 10. I'm wary of ending up in a situation where I've nearly finished everything but I can't actually use the computer because I've forgotten something.

Lexingtron 1 point 18 months ago

Make sure you are able to connect your Computer using an Ethernet cable to get internet if you can't do that buy this, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007GMPZ0A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_6TtZzbCE5T4N3

Lexingtron 1 point 18 months ago

Connect your computer to the internet, so you can install drives. Sorry forgot to add that.

Zelderon 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

ok... a 1080ti is fast, and ive got one in my system. but theres no way on earth itll run destiny 2 across 3 4k monitors at 60fps... just not gonna happen.

Bladerunner17 1 point 17 months ago

Is this 1GB Ethernet speed compatible?

ksvermont 1 point 17 months ago

Wont the gpu be too powerful for the cpu

dylanrussell 1 point 17 months ago

Is there a build video for this? I just purchased all the parts and definitely need help putting it all together.

Bartholemew 1 point 17 months ago

Most builds are usually the same. Just google a youtube video on building a Gaming PC with similar specs and you should be good.

Our cooler is the Phanteks PH-TC12DX_BK. This is an easy to install, cooler that fits our black and white color theme and performs well.
