Forum Topic "2 DOLLAR PSU!!! What do ya thinK????"

BigAll 5 Builds 2 points 24 months ago

Antec has a good reputation, they just don't get much love because they don't really refresh their lines much or pander to gaming etc.

to weed out the bad ones you can usually use the paperclip test, but this only confirms basic functionality (that it turns on) and doesn't garentee stability. (you'll want to do a stress test to make sure everything is stable anyway)

amazing deal for $2, I would have gotten 15 (the price of a low end psu :P) and just saved them to use when needed

If you don't happen to find a donor for an io board and the pcb itself isn't damaged you can always attempt to fix it yourself with the help of a soldering iorn. you can easily find packs of usb ports on amazon for pretty cheap.

Forum Topic "Ryzen ipc beating skylake in linux"

BigAll submitter 5 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

It has, though I usually start with sandy bridge as there were actually some good architectural improvments :)

Forum Topic "Ryzen ipc beating skylake in linux"

BigAll submitter 5 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

somewhat more likely to me: they did have a pocket of extra performance but have been procrastinating making performance improvements on sandy bridge so they've been leaking performance and shrinking the die to hide the fact that their architecture is stagnant, lol.

Either way to purposely hold back performance in windows would mean being in cahoots with microsoft as they are the ones actually writing the windows driver

Forum Topic "Ryzen ipc beating skylake in linux"

BigAll submitter 5 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

XD amd and their documentation.

Intel is a big contributer to the linux kernel (probrably the best drivers I've seen). I have no doubt that Intel has a very well done kernel driver. Considering that the architecture hasn't changed a whole lot since sandy bridge (well before ms started relying so much on architecture specific code) I don't see how there could be very much gain to squeze out.

Forum Topic "Ryzen ipc beating skylake in linux"

BigAll submitter 5 Builds 1 point 24 months ago

hopefully the windows kernel driver will be comperable to the linux driver in the future, but it will be harder than making the linux driver was and is completely dependant on microsoft so who knows

Forum Topic "Ultra sound damping headphones"

BigAll 5 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

The anc9 should be a nice incremental upgrade. Audio Technica tends to have very well priced quality products and these are no exception.

They are both wired, the battery is only used for the active noise cancelling and they can be used without it if you don't need it at the moment or if the battery is dead.

Forum Topic "Ultra sound damping headphones"

BigAll 5 Builds 1 point 25 months ago

noise dampening headphones is a really underdeveloped market, there's one that I found from a company that really knows what they're doing. link

if you're going to be using these a bit away from everything active noise canceling headphones are good with medium volume droning noise (think airplane noise) in which case I would recommend these

of course, closed back over ear headphones will give you some isolation from outside noise and is simpler and more cost effective than either of the above link

if you are using optical out a sound card will make absolutely no difference as the digital to analog conversion is happening in the sound bar itself.

Some information, note that the db levels are in dba (a weighted) which better reflects how people actually hear sound, but an a weighted measurement will always be lower than an unweighted measurement.

If you do need some serious sound dampening I would suggest getting some protective earmuffs and wearing clip on or in ear headphones under them. With a touch of ingenuity you can even mod some on ear headphones (my suggestion would be the koss ksc75 into the cups like this

Forum Topic "Firefox vs. Opera browser opinions"

BigAll 5 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

I used to use opera on an old p4 xp machine, but I haven't used it much ever since they switched to chromium for the rendering engine, now it is just chrome with a different feature set (and honestly, I like chrome's features better than opera's).

nowadays I use firefox for the most part because I can leave a bunch of tabs open with no performance impact on the rest of the machine (I tend to have a lot of tabs, like 4-6 windows full of tabs, chrome's sandboxing really takes a toll with that many tabs) and I keep chrome around in case I need proper flash support (because Linux hasn't had a proper flash update in 4 years, but chrome has its own version of flash) and as I start doing more away from web browsers I have shifted focus from features to efficiency.

Note:because opera and chrome use the same rendering engine performance and such should be near identical between them. Basically, chrome sandboxes everything you do which is great for security, but makes it a resource hog. If your computer can handle it it has great performance though.

My suggestion is to use a different antivirus if avg is causing trouble :P

Forum Topic "Console HDD Upgrading"

BigAll 5 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

Can i go for a hdd that has a faster rpm than 5400 for the console, or is the console speed lock the hddd rpm?
can i pick a hdd with more cache or does the console lock the cache?

the interface used (sata) does not give any control over things like this, so there is no way for the console to be able to do something like that.

can i pick a hdd with moar capacity than 2tb or will the co sole prevent bigger than 2tb

it does not support drives larger than 2tb for the internal drive.

The xbox one does let you use an external hdd. the only requirements are that it is usb3 and is larger than 256gb, so you can easily use a usb dock like this one with no restrictions as to size and usb3 is fast enough not to hold back a 7200rpm drive.

Forum Topic "SSD cable needs."

BigAll 5 Builds 1 point 26 months ago

Look up "sleaved sata extention" iirc silverstone, nzxt, and rosewill all make them starting at around $5 each (though the price varies wildly) you can get extentions for any cable you want, but you'll have to make sure you have the space to put the extra slack where it won't be an eyesore. There are companies like cablemods that specialise in this kind of thing, but they can get quite expensive.

Forum Topic "Airflow: Positive or negative airflow"

I usually use negative airflow. one good fan in the back will handle 99% of builds. Dust is a different issue, but if someone isn't goingto take the time to dust out their pc they probrably wont bother to clean the dust filters either which is just as bad.

From what i've seen there will be 8c16t 6c12t and 4c8t cpus made from the summit ridge die and later when vega+zen based apus come there will be 4 and 2 core apus (no extra threads) with possibly a 4 core athlon as a cut down version of that die

Forum Topic "How to tell CPU health - Interested in buying a used CPU"

BigAll 5 Builds 2 points 26 months ago

Cpu performance degradation is not a thing in cpus. If it is working it will perform as it always has.

What is a thing is voltage degridation, which is where the cpu has to have higher voltages to be stable at the same clockrate, but this only happens under extreme overclocking and voltages higher than any sane person will use for daly use.

A modern cpu will always shut itself off before reaching damaging tempratures. Cold shock can crack contacts under the die, but that only happens with nl2 cooling (once again extreme overclocking)

overall buying a used cpu is pretty safe as it can be very hard to damage it under normal usage.
